Every once in a while, something happens that really matters. Something that will define at least the next chapter of your journey – perhaps it’s a conversation with a client, a meeting with a visionary or a major event in your personal life. Below, you’ll find some very insightful folks sharing defining moments from their journeys.

A defining moment for me was the ending of a relationship that I thought would last forever. The breakup left me feeling alone and empty because I had spent so much of my life fulfilling the needs of everyone that I had forgotten about myself. I coped with my pain with food which led me to gain over 80 pounds. I tried ignoring the pain by telling myself that “I am a strong black woman” and that I didn’t need anyone. I told myself that I was fine but in reality, I cried myself to sleep every night. Read more>>

In the winter of 2018, I received a phone call from my doctor that would change the course of my life forever. She was calling to let me know that I had cervical cancer, an illness that came completely without warning. Prior to that diagnosis, I had been working in private practice as a licensed psychotherapist, and the hours and intensity of the work had been leading me into a complete burnout for years. At the time, the diagnosis was a shock, but now that I know about the impact of stress on the body’s immune system, I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner. Read more>>

As an industry-trained wellness coach with a Masters degree in Health Promotion, I felt pretty skilled in providing support and coaching to clients who wanted to improve their health and wellbeing. What I found to be interesting pretty early on was that I had this uncanny ability to notice or sense what was really going on underneath their health struggles, and could oftentimes make recommendations that previous coaches failed to offer. My clientele quickly grew over the course because I was having such success with my clients, and I just shrugged that off as just having really good training and education. Little did I know at the time that I had a Spirit team that was helping me! Read more>>

When my boys were little, I took two of them to a hip-hop dance class. (It wasn’t their forte.) However, when I got back home and watched the recording, I could see my reflection in the glass. I had a HUGE smile on my face. Huge. It hit me. I needed to do more things that made my face look like that. I started going to dance classes twice a week… for myself. I loved every moment of it. I also learned that magically, all my other responsibilities that had previously drained me simply didn’t bother me as much. Just two hours a week doing something just for myself allowed me to show up with more patience, calm, and joy in all other areas of my life. Read more>>

I started my health and wellness professional career about seven years ago. That began after my mom passed away. When my mom was alive and battling cancer, I started taking better care of myself to take better care of her and it improved our relationship and inspired my desire to stay fit and strong, mentally and physically. After she passed away, it was such a difficult time in my life but I continued to exercise consistently and I began to feel happy again so I asked my fitness instructor, “How can I do what you do?”. I wanted to help others feel better through fitness like it helped me. Read more>>

As a competitive gymnast until I was 23, I developed the love for fitness and nutrition on a very deep level. Something I always knew I wanted to share with the world in some capacity or another, a way to make a difference in the lives of the people around me. But for as long as I can remember, I have had a complete passion for film and television, acting in particular. It was something that made be feel insanely alive and thrive…. – however, I was so scared to do it that I never took the chance when I was younger. Read more>>

At 18, living in small town Texas, my life completely changed. For better. For worse. It was hard to know how pivotal this experience would be. I grew up swimming on a local team from age 4 – on, and was naively confident that I had the ability to help a friend train for an open water swim without ever having been in an open body of water. The 30min drive to the lake was the first indicator that I was unprepared – nerves crept up and I had to turn the music off on my car to try to focus my brain on the overwhelming noise inside of it. The moment that stands out MOST to me is when I decided to take the risk, go “ALL-IN”, and bet on myself. It was scary. Real scary. Like, Michael Myers running at you with a knife in a horror-film, heart beating out of your chest type scary. But, I had the utmost faith in God that, with his guidance, we could create a one-of-a-kind, successful basketball business. At the time in 2015, I didn’t have a lick of business experience. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Friends and even my own parents questioned my decision and rightfully so. I didn’t have much money. At age 26, I was still living at home with my parents. Read more>>

I decided to become a makeup artist when I became sick. I won’t disclose the medical condition, but the medicine made all of my locs fall out. I felt ugly and undesirable. I started watching YouTube videos on makeup tutorials. I just wanted to feel beautiful again. Once I picked up a brush, I never put it down! Now I am a thriving make-up artist in the houston area working on opening a new salon! Read more>>
