We often hear about bad bosses, but we think it’s important to talk about the good ones because we hope that by giving folks examples of how to be a good boss we can inspire future bosses to be better, to do better for their employees and all stakeholders.

My first boss was an amazing guide, friend and mentor — deeply engaged in the welfare of her team of English lecturers at a College in Bombay. She was kind, but clear about goals and directives. She had the human touch and one could go to her with any problem, classroom issues, as well as personal problems. She taught me what it was to be a real leader. It set the tone for my career in teaching. Read more>>

My manager, aka my mom. She has my best interests at heart with everything I decide to do from cheerleading, dancing, rapping, fashion, to modeling–everything! She’s always found bookings for me. Right now, we’re learning together, but she’s one good manager; she’s doing her biggest one. She makes everything happen from finding me dancers, security, stylists, my team… everything. Read more>>

Throughout my life, from childhood to medical school and now as a practicing physician, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have had mentors who shaped not just my career, but my character. Among the most influential are my classical Indian dance guru, Mrs. Priyamvada Sankar, and my classical Indian music guru, Dr. Usha Srinivasan. Their mentorship instilled in me the core values of patience, discipline, focused practice, and the ability to receive feedback with humility–qualities that have guided me far beyond the stage or the studio. Learning the ancient art forms of Bharatanatyam and Carnatic music demands more than technical mastery. It requires a resilient mindset and the ability to connect deeply with emotion and storytelling. Under their guidance, I learned to refine my craft while also cultivating mental fortitude and an unwavering drive toward excellence. Read more>>

The most impactful boss I’ve ever had was in fact the first one I ever had in the beauty industry. Her name is Andrea cooper, I assisted her for almost a year at my first salon. I was 18 at the time and she had over a decade of doing hair under her belt, and the client count to match. I watched her every move so much that I just started to be 2 steps ahead of where she was at in her day. She handled herself so professionally but just had built these strong connections with her guests, I knew I wanted to be like her when I grew up haha. To this day, she is my best friend and now co-owns a salon in El Paso where we are hoping I’ll have a guest spot there every 6-8 weeks. I’m so proud of her. Read more>>

The best boss I’ve ever had is my current one Chris. When Hollow Heroes started he’s been a big supporter of us. He’s been more than accommodating when it comes to needing to leave early or working from home when there’s a gig or rehearsal that I need to get to. Not many bosses would be very understanding of someone at this point in their life trying to play in a band, but I’m beyond thankful for his support. Read more>>
