We often hear about bad bosses, but we think it’s important to talk about the good ones because we hope that by giving folks examples of how to be a good boss we can inspire future bosses to be better, to do better for their employees and all stakeholders.

I have a good amount of mentors but the ones that have got me to where I am now in my career and passion are a select few. Going back to the beginning, I was first introduced to my life-long friend and brother Rashaad Clinkscales, he was always coming for me and his brothers all the time, fish and grits with big jug of kool-aid. When we finished high-school he we t to culinary school J&A in south philly, he gave me a call one day and said what am I doing with my life. I told him I wasn’t doing anything productive, at the time I was just being a knuckle head young bul running around in the streets of Philadelphia. So he said why don’t you come to Culinary school, so I said sure. At that point I went and got classical training but I dropped out half-way through the semester because I had a child on the way so I had to work to provide for my son. So my first job as a professional cook was at El rey where I met my lifelong mentor and uncle Chef Dionicio. Read more>>

When I started my journey at Entertainment, I used to work for an afterschool mentorship program, and my boss was very kind to me. She would let me come in late or leave early so I could go audition for projects in order to pursue my career, and she didn’t force me to stay on the clock every single day. I really appreciate her for allowing me to chase my dreams while also being kind enough to give me a job. Read more>>

I have had the good fortune to work for many talented and generous folks. Sometimes it has been actual training, other times I learned invaluable skills by observing. What has had the biggest impact, are those bosses that have taken a leap of faith with me. Starting with Lauren for giving me my first job on a network show. Debbie for taking a chance on me. Matteo and Victoria for giving me my first chance at producing commercials. Jennifer and Brittney who guided me and opened so many doors for me. Lorie for pushing for the opportunity for me to jump into production supervising, and later advocating for me to join the studio team. All the producers and execs (Nikki, Grady, Anne, Mattie, Marianne, Guillermo, Ricardo, Chris, and Courtney) who made it possible for me to direct. Read more>>

I was fortunate enough to have 2 amazing mentors/bosses. The first was with my initial position as an aesthetician in 2006. I had just finished school and realized that I knew nothing but the bare basics of aesthetics. Minka Fitzgerald hired me and taught me everything she knew, passed her overflow of clients on to me, and taught me the importance of the client experience. She fully supported my learning efforts and growing clientele and even sent me to some continuing education courses. Her openness and giving of her knowledge amazed me as this field is extremely competitive and most aestheticians keep their tricks to themselves. A few years later I moved to a different city and started work at a typical day spa chain, where I quickly became the lead aesthetician, Everything I had learned from Minka set me apart from the other aestheticians but I knew I wanted and needed more of a challenge.
