What’s in a name? A lot apparently, as entrepreneurs, artists, and makers of all kinds spend enormous amounts of energy searching for the right name for their business, project, organization, or creation. Below, you’ll find the stories of how various successful brands, creators and entrepreneurs came up with their names.
Medicated Chef

My name is Chef Danilo Suarez and I created the Medicated Chef brand. My love for cannabis and cuisine was the main influence to create the Medicated Chef. I thought I can infuse all my favorite meals and treats I love to eat. After years of cooking and infusing foods I provide elevated cannabis dinners. I love what I do and sharing my talent with as many clients as possible. Read more>>

Believe it or not, my company’s name had nothing to do with design. I could tell you about my parents’ divorce and how I felt lost until I discovered design, or how most of my teachers and friends thought I was crazy for having such big dreams. That, however, is something I will not do. To be clear, I named my company Precious Designs to remind myself to value the people and little things in my life. It didn’t make a difference that the majority of my teachers had faith in me. What mattered was that one teacher who believed in me. What mattered most was my family’s constant encouragement and encouragement to pursue my dream, no matter how big or crazy it sounded coming from my 11-year-old mouth. Read more>>

This is a short but sweet answer! I had attended my first tutu school and was making my samples to show future clients my work and the options of designs. I decided to take a series of courses at the local community college continuing education program for adults that was named “Business for Sewn Products”. It seemed like a natural fit. One day, we were encouraged to bring in a sample of our work and sell it to the class. There were clothing articles and aprons but I was the only one making professional tutus for the theater. I grew up in an English speaking household and really wasn’t exposed to Spanish until I took Spanish 1 as a freshman in high school. I quickly realized that learning a 2nd language would open the door for me to engage with a huge portion of the population that was previously inaccessible to me. I went on to major in Spanish in college, become a certified Spanish teacher, and eventually moved to Mexico. I returned to the US to work as a dual language teacher, but after spending 8 years teaching in public school I decided to leave my full time position and stay home with my growing family. The name “Purely Perspective Photography” became my business name by accident if I am being completely honest! I had no plans of creating a business when the name was originally created – photography was simply a hobby. I was mostly taking pictures of landscapes and travel scenes when I got started with photography. I wanted to create an Instagram for my images and needed a unique username… it was that simple! That is when I started to think of names & what photography meant to me. Photography allowed me to capture the world through my own unique perspective – and this is how “Purely Perspective” was born. I started Creatrix based on a daily affirmation I told myself, “I want to dominate all things creative.” Using a portmanteau of two words that I felt describe myself and my vision, I combined Creative and Dominatrix in one and birthed, Creatrix. We are a multi divisions company dabbling in small business consulting, talent vetting and are certified to obtain government contracts for other local businesses. Read more>>

It’s not easy to find a business name you like that also has URLs and social handles available. We knew we wanted it to be two words, one word about travel, and one word about the type of travel/quality of service. We wanted to keep it short and sweet. We tried hundreds of combinations of words about travel searching for that perfect combination, that was also available for our website URL. After days of striking out, we sat down and said “today we will decide”. We spent many more hours pulling our hair out, and then decided we needed a break. Read more>>

I have been asked so many times about this! in all actuality we heard bodiac the first time in a rap song. I don’t even remember which one it was but the word resonated for me afterwards that this would be a fantastic name for our business. Bodiac (pronounced bod-ee-ac) to me has a very special meaning. It is someone who is really working on themselves to look & feel better no matter where their area of focus is at the time. It’s about someone who gives themselves permission to say “It’s ok to focus on me” They are disciplined & focused as they understand taking time to reenergize yourself has to be a priority if you are going to take on the world around you and survive. I wanted to come up with a cute and unique name, but how do you do that when everything has been thought of already? My daughters (who are my number 1 supporters) and I were brainstorming names for 2 to 3 days, but nothing stood out to us. We wanted something elegant and sweet that showed that we specialize in mini desserts. Eventually, my eldest daughter said Tiny Tea Party and all of us thought “Yes! That’s the one!” Read more>>

I always wanted to start a clothing line being a very fashionable person. The name “Super Vision” was not available. I always looked at myself as being a CEO. I wanted a clothing line for business professionals called “CEO” which for me stood for commit evolve overcome. I added that to the SuperVision to allow the name to be used and the company name to be what it is today. CEO Super Vision LLC. Read more>>

I wanted something that would represent me and what better way to do that is to use my name. I want to be able to provide my services in such a way that my name would be said in rooms I am not in. When people say the name of my company, they are speaking about me … my brand … what I represent … my ideas … etc. I want my name to be synonymous with high quality, high service, and high expectations. What better way to have something you’ve created be a part of the world? Your name is special … unique to you … even if someone else spells their name the same way as you. Read more>>

Omega Strong Gym, how the name came alive? It all happened 5 years ago, when my business partner and I were trying to find a name for the gym. We wanted to make sure the name was majestic and stood out from the competition, Originally the name OMEGA came from a musical piano piece I composed back in 2012, which was named The Omega. The name stood out and was majestic, my business partner and I loved it, but something was missing… The point of joining a gym is to get strong, eventually we were trying to figure out another name and both of us came up with Omega Strong, as soon as we said it BAM! I chose this seemingly mundane question (topic), because it aligns to a pivotal moment in the trajectory of our company. Ten years ago, I founded a one-man consulting firm named – Futuristic Woo. This was simply the combination of my two top CliftonStrengths (gallup.com). Which at the time – made sense. My company’s name reflected it’s Founder’s strengths. We would eventually pivot to Woo Creative (Woo being my nickname). Five years into owning the business it had gone from a one-person consulting firm to a ten-person full-service creative agency. It was at this time we started exploring a merger or acquisition. Read more>>

It’s pretty funny because the first name that I came up with for my business was Delightful Tidbits. I wanted to name my first business after the animals that I had as a child growing up. I thought on it more, asked a few people what they thought of it and they came back and said it sounded like a dessert company. I do not specialize in desserts! So I went with my first initial thought. Sage and Bleu come from two Australian Shephards that my family had growing up. There were a couple of other animals but none of them vibed like Sage and Bleu. Read more>>
