Social media can be a really powerful way to connect with and build deeper relationships with your audience – but it can be extremely time consuming. So, we asked some folks we admire to share how they manage their social profiles and whether they’ve hired professionals to help.

We launched during Covid to “Bring the Museum Home” since so many museums had closed. I realized that, though I’d never used social media, I didn’t have FB, Twitter, or YouTube accounts and had no idea what Instagram and TikTok were; these were the most expedient ways to share the wonders of paleontology. I decided to run the Fossil Crates social media personally. I didn’t want to, far from it, but no one else had easy access to 30 years of paleo images and a deep knowledge of taxonomy, anatomy, and morphology. I pick images I think are cool, select music with lyrics that complement the subject, and provide lots of accompanying text that isn’t simply warmed-up Wikipedia facts but rather comes from the academic literature and my personal experiences. I’m new to Colorado so building my clients and starting over has been little hard but it is getting there. Just to take an hour or two out of your work day to be the one to check the messages and to run your social media on your own. Read more>>

I manage everything in my company. It´s hard when you start to hire a team to manage it because you have to invest in other things like material, supplies and equipment. I´m really looking forward to being able to hire someone who can help me with social media because you really have to know how it works, also to take professional pictures and answer to customers. I would completely recommend to have someone in charge of that because it´s one of the most important part of a business. Read more>>

I personally handle all of my own social media in terms of content. I do have help in the actual posting (saves me about 15 minutes a day), but all posts are approved by me and written by me. I think it’s important for the entrepreneur to be involved. Knowing the needs and expectations of your clients is paramount. To me, only the entrepreneur has the vision to be able to do that in a unified way, not an outside marketing firm. Social media, like everything, should reflect the central vision of the single leader whom the clients know and trust. Read more>>
