Do you have a manager, agent or representative who helps you sign or close deals? Why or why not? If you do have one, how did you find them and how did you know they were the right one for you? Susan Furlong
I’ve been fortunate to work with a couple excellent literary agents over the course of my career. When planning to pitch my latest work, I researched agents through Publishers Marketplace, and online resource for authors, agents, and publishers. She had a strong sales record in the mystery/thriller genre, so I reached out with a query. She called a few days later and after a long talk, I decided to sign with her. I’m glad I did. She’s fearless in pitching to editors, has a strong sales record, is assessable, and most importantly, she likes my work. I think that’s a key component. Currently I have a manager Robert Barnes and he helps me with my Career Direction as well as helping me book jobs and Auditions. We met from Backstage the casting app. I would book a lot of jobs on my own from backstage but I wanted to book bigger roles as well as better paying jobs. It was truly like a miracle when he found my profile on backstage and reached out to me, I thought it was a fake email at first but after responding and doing some research I made the decision to sign. The writers life, like all the creative fields, is not a smooth path. I tried for quite some time to navigate the ebb and flow of the writing/publishing business on my own, a DIY ideology, but after years of doing it on my own I finally got to the point where the idea of possibly securing some representation might actually be a logical move.
