There’s a concept of the Matthew Effect which uses math to illustrate what folks have lamented about for thousands of years – the rich get richer while the poor get poorer. Take tech for example – the rich and poor often have different problems, but because it’s more profitable to solve problems for the wealthy a disproportionate share of tech innovation focuses on solving problems for the affluent. However, it doesn’t have to be this way – and we have been blown away by the thousands of members of our community who have devoted their lives through their businesses, organizations and art to serve the underserved.

One of the ventures I’ve been building over the past 10+ years is [HAS HEART], a nonprofit organization that utilizes art and design to share veterans’ stories. Having not come from a military background, this was a world I knew nothing about. But, by giving my time and attention to listening and even helping tell their stories, I instantly understood the need and importance for other civilians, especially creatives, to connect with veterans and celebrate their dedication to serving others. I started my design career working for a nonprofit that partnered and worked with many underserved communities. That experience opened a lot of doors for me and I was able to make connections with people who served those groups on the ground level. The whole “Why” for my business was born out of the realization that many of my peers (including myself) were having trouble saving up enough money for the down payment needed to become a homeowner in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I grew up. The funds needed for a down payment and closing costs here in the Bay area often amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars since the cost of living is so incredibly high here. Read more>>

The mission of my coffee brand Ferocity Coffee, as well as the nonprofit I helped establish is to create sustainable systems of support for the trans and LGBTQ+ community. The inspiration behind it is my own story of having to move out very young from my home, without having a support system or supportive parents to help me find my footing. Unfortunately, this is way too common of a story for many trans and queer people, with 40% of the homeless youth in Florida identifying as LGBTQ+. Read more>>
