Today we’d like to introduce you to Zikki Munyao.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
From Kenya to the World: The Journey of Zikki Munyao
I was born and raised in Kenya, surrounded by a culture of resilience, community, and an ever-deepening sense of purpose. My journey took a transformative turn in 1998 when I moved to the United States, seeking opportunities that would allow me to build a meaningful life while staying true to my roots. Soon after my arrival, I joined the U.S. Army, serving until 2002. Those years in the military instilled in me discipline, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to service—values that have shaped every endeavor I’ve undertaken since.
After my military service, I decided to further my education, a decision that led me to the University of Virginia, where I earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree. My studies paved the way for a career in consulting and oncology data analytics, a field I have been deeply engaged in since 2008. Through my work, I have contributed to advancements in healthcare and data-driven solutions that enhance patient outcomes, reinforcing my belief in using technology and data for meaningful impact.
Yet, my purpose extends beyond analytics and business. Philanthropy has been at the heart of my mission. Over the years, I have worked to impact the lives of over 20,000 people, providing education and access to clean water in Kenya and Nigeria. I have co-founded three 501(c)(3) organizations, with our current initiative, Just Help Africa, focusing on delivering sustainable education and clean water solutions to underserved communities. This work is not just about charity; it is about empowerment—helping communities build long-term, self-sustaining futures.
Beyond my philanthropic efforts, I am an artist and storyteller. While I do not sell my original artwork, I accept commissions from CEOs, art collectors, and premium buyers. My work is also available as prints and merchandise, allowing a broader audience to experience and support my artistic vision. Art, for me, is not just about expression—it is a way to connect, inspire, and create lasting impressions.
Storytelling plays a vital role in my daily life. Every morning, I start the day with a ‘Morning Boost’ on YouTube, offering motivation and wisdom to my growing community. My son and I also share engaging content on our IcedCacti YouTube channel, where we blend humor, creativity, and culture. IcedCacti.com extends that passion by offering fun merchandise, celebrating life’s vibrant moments.
Agriculture is another avenue through which I seek impact. As an onion farmer in Kenya, I have firsthand experience in sustainable farming and food security. Climate sustainability is a cause I am deeply passionate about, and I am actively working on initiatives that will position me as a leader in this space. Stay tuned—big things are coming.
At the core of everything I do—whether in business, philanthropy, art, or storytelling—is a desire to uplift, connect, and inspire. My journey is ongoing, and I welcome others to walk alongside me as we build a better world, one initiative, one painting, one story, and one community at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not Ready for CollegeWhen I first arrived in the U.S.,
I wasn’t ready for college and quickly realized that I lacked the discipline and direction to succeed in an academic setting. This led me to drop out of school and join the U.S. Army, where I gained the structure and resilience necessary to push forward in life.
Failed Business Ventures
I have started several businesses in Kenya, but not all have been successful. Some failed due to mismanagement of funds, and I learned tough lessons about financial oversight, accountability, and strategic planning. These experiences have been invaluable in shaping how I approach business today.
Farming Challenges
Farming in Kenya has been one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced. It requires navigating unpredictable weather patterns, fluctuating market prices, and logistical constraints. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to sustainable agriculture and continue working toward making a lasting impact in this space.
Career Setbacks
After years of building a successful career in consulting and oncology data analytics, I was recently laid off. While this was an unexpected and difficult transition, it has opened the door to bigger and better opportunities. I am using this time to explore new ventures and step into leadership roles that align with my vision for the future.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist and storyteller who uses bold, expressive art to capture personal journeys, powerful moments, and cultural narratives. My work is deeply rooted in storytelling, and I specialize in large-scale pieces—most of my work is 36″x48″—that evoke emotion, reflection, and inspiration.
Though I have created over 70 original pieces, I do not offer them for sale. Instead, I focus on commissions, working with CEOs, private collectors, and organizations to translate their unique stories into compelling visual art. Whether through a commissioned painting or a large-scale mural, my goal is to create artwork that holds deep personal or corporate significance, serving as a lasting representation of one’s journey, values, or legacy.
What sets my work apart is its purpose. A percentage of every sale directly supports clean water initiatives and education in Sub-Saharan Africa. Art, for me, is not just about creation—it’s about impact. Through my work, I contribute to community-driven projects, ensuring that each piece sold makes a tangible difference in people’s lives.
I take immense pride in the ability of my art to spark conversations, inspire change, and leave a lasting imprint beyond the canvas. My collectors aren’t just purchasing art; they’re becoming part of a movement that merges creativity with global impact.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The most important quality that drives my success is my deep appreciation for life itself. We have such a short stint in this world, and I believe in making every moment count. From the moment my eyes open—often before my alarm—I’m driven to maximize my time, ensuring that every day is filled with purpose, creation, and impact. This relentless drive allows me to accomplish more, push creative boundaries, and continuously grow, both as an artist and as a changemaker.
Beyond art, my work is rooted in giving back. A percentage of every sale directly supports clean water initiatives and education in Sub-Saharan Africa, making each piece not just a creation, but a catalyst for change. What sets me apart is that my art is more than just visual—it tells stories, inspires transformation, and leaves a lasting impact on both my collectors and the communities it helps uplift.
