Today we’d like to introduce you to Willie Bell
Hi Willie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got started in the mental health field by simple making a decision to not wait on others to decide whether they wanted me or not. I enrolled in college with a major that was a joint agreement with another university in town. The agreement was that once you finish at the college that I was enrolled in, your transferred to the other college. There was a waiting list. The caveat to the story is that even being on the waiting list with a higher GPA that the college with the agreement, the college would take their own students first regardless of the agreement or GPA, standing with the university that I was transferring from. So, I took matters into my own hands and review the college that I was enrolled in catalog and sought a major that would allow me to graduate in a timely manner. Psychology was that major and I have benefitted from that decision immensely.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, the road has not been smooth. A bachelor’s in psychology at the time did not mean much, so I would have to go to graduate school. Working full time and going to graduate school, to say the least was a chore. Being in the field of psychology and/or social services does not pay much but it is the ability to help others that would make the work worth it. Starting out at the ground floor and working my way up taught me a great deal as I now help others with the process as I have spoken at several universities imparting knowledge in the classroom setting on the rewards, benefits as well as the challenges to include the necessity of self-care.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am in the mental health field. I am in private practice. I specialize in anger, mood and stress management. I am known to have a calm, caring demeanor and I am proud of that. Taking on other people’s problems and helping them to navigate their way to solutions and being a better person is also something that I take pride in. What sets me apart from others to include others as well is that I enjoy what I do and not looking to get rich off of what I do although it has rewarded me with wealth from what I do-a wealth of knowledge, skill and resilience to continue to help others with meeting them where they are.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My wanting others to do well and providing them with the skills to do so, is a characteristic that is most important to my success. Being non-judgmental and providing quality care to whomever regardless of the walk of life that they come from is essential in the services that I provide.
