Today we’d like to introduce you to Uriah Garrett
Hi Uriah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hard work! I started music when I was really young playing the drums at church. That, with time, developed into multiple instruments, songwriting, recording, and engineering. None of it came easy and most times I had no idea what I was doing until I did. Music is a form of creative expression that, no matter your skill set, if you put enough time into it tomorrow’s work will sound clearer than yesterday’s. I realized this really early in my journey and it’s something that keeps my inner drive fueled.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has most definitely, not been a smooth road. Being a drummer finding spaces to practice is what probably makes or breaks your passion. I was fortunate enough to spend all my adolescent years in spaces that allowed me to express my thoughts freely. Now, not so much but there are still ways to practice. Being a writer I ran into many struggles from picking topics to elaborating on them and striving to stay true and make them “relatable”. I found that not looking back or sitting in the same place helped me develop a strong pen quickly. I used to aim to write 3 songs a day after coming home from a full day of either school or work. Tired, I still would push through because I wasn’t satisfied with how my songs sounded. Even though true, I felt they weren’t as genuine as they could be; as blunt, or as candid as I set out for them to be. Then, there was making those truths undeniable, so good that even on the first listen the audience knows there’s something there.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My Art. I’m a writer. I’m a beat-maker & producer. I’m an instrumentalist; drummer and pianist, still learning my fretboard. I’m a DJ. I’m a sound engineer. A curator of sorts with many different passions. I’m most proud of the work I’ve been releasing this year it has been the clearest I’ve ever felt as a songwriter and is teaching me how to tap into that specific flow state more and more. Everybody can’t do what I do. They haven’t been through the things that I have experienced or even have done the work I did to get here – or there would be 1000 me’s. People actually want to hear what I have to say and thet value my opinion because of my character, a lot of my peers just rap.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Honestly, I would have to say the other things I persue in music. I feel like if they know me for drumming they’re surprised I’m good at rapping and that I have been for years or vice versa. The people who know my raps didn’t know I’ve been sitting on a the kit way longer. Same with the beats or DJing, and to me, it’s crazy because don’t they all go hand-in-hand? It’ll all just come together one day and they’ll see it in full glory.
