Today we’d like to introduce you to Sienna Wang.
Hi Sienna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been a classical music fan since I was a child. Though I studied engineering and then have been working in tech for years, classical music is always my comfort.
Growing up as a classical music and opera fan, I realized that many people found that classical music is difficult to approach and understand, therefore, I decided to create a space to write down my thoughts and feeling about classical music and hope by sharing my love for music, more and more people will find the connection to this beautiful art.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are struggles, but I think I always thrive under stress. With a full time job during the day, it is really challenging to have spare time creating and writing. However, everytime after I finish my work, I go home and choose an album, sometimes Tchaikovsky and sometimes Brahms, or Verdi. While listening to these masterpieces, I feel that I am relieved and have the urge to write down my obsession for these intriguing melodies.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I write about my love for classical music and opera. I share my thoughts and feelings as a listener instead of analyzing the music theories like most professionals do. I hope by sharing my experiences of my encounters with music, I can make more people like me who are not a professional musician begin their journey with classical music. Therefore, I write down my personal stories and connect them with my favorite albums and composers. I also share photos everytime when I go to live concerts to share my excitement when seeing my favorite pianists or opera singers like fans chasing a movie star.
Besides albums played by great maestros, and concerts held in the magnificent concert halls, I also enjoy music that happens spontaneously. Like Bach in the Subways in New York City, and the duet playing the piano and double bass in the middle of the garden hall at dinner time, I believe classical music can be played and enjoyed anywhere and anytime. We can enjoy music when sitting seriously in a concert hall, or appreciate it on the street at any moment.
Even one same piece of music can inspire us at different life moments. Like the Brahms Symphony No.4, when I was listening to it when I was in my 20s, I liked the intriguing melodies and its emotional presentation. However, when I am now in my 30s, I realize and sympathize with the melancholy depicted by the melodies. Therefore, everytime I feel upset by work or need something to listen to when I am having my wine on Friday night, Brahms has become my favorite company.
No matter how time passes by, and how things change, and no matter if we stop by, the music will always be played as long as we are willing to listen.
It is always our tenderest dependence.
