Today we’d like to introduce you to Seulgi Kim.
Hi Seulgi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been drawn to stories and the power of visual language to connect people. This curiosity inspired me to explore graphic design, a field where I could combine my love for storytelling with visual creativity. Ultimately, this passion led me to New York, a city full of inspiration and opportunities.
Since moving here, I’ve experienced countless new things, from my studies to the diverse people I’ve met along the way. Each interaction and project has helped me grow, deepening my understanding of design and its impact. This journey has truly broadened my perspective and shaped my path into motion design, allowing me to create work that resonates with others and tells meaningful stories.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Adapting to a different culture was not an easy process for me. There were many times when I felt like a stranger, and that feeling was very real. However, as I spent more time here, I began to notice that many others shared similar feelings of being out of place. This realization brought me a sense of comfort and connection.
Each challenge I faced became an opportunity for growth. Whether it was navigating new customs or meeting people from diverse backgrounds, these experiences pushed me to step outside my comfort zone. Over time, I became more adaptable and developed a stronger sense of confidence in myself. Looking back, I appreciate how these moments shaped me and helped me connect with others in meaningful ways.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I bring designs to life through animation, transforming static visuals into dynamic stories that resonate through motion. I’ve had the opportunity to work on many exciting projects with talented people, but my favorite will always be my senior year project, Ambivalence. While it’s a student project and has its imperfections, it feels genuine and fresh to me. I enjoyed every aspect of the process, from developing the story from the ground up to animating the final render. I’m particularly drawn to fun and playful ideas, which allows me to appreciate my work as a motion designer.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis was a challenging and sad time for many, including myself. However, it also encouraged me to reflect on my life and focus on personal growth. I took the opportunity to explore new fields that I hadn’t considered before. I made an effort to connect with society by listening to various podcasts, staying updated with the news, and reading more books across different genres.
This period taught me valuable lessons about the importance of pausing to care for others and taking things slow. I realized that sometimes we need to step back and appreciate the little things in life. Engaging with different ideas and perspectives helped me broaden my interests and develop a deeper understanding of the world around me. Overall, this experience has shaped my outlook and motivated me to continue growing personally and professionally.
