Today we’d like to introduce you to Salimah Scott

Hi Salimah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I started making candles from home in 2019 after my divorce. I was desperately looking for ways to decompress and relax after long days of work and caring for my two children. I initially experimented with making candles to satisfy my own newfound addiction to lighting candles nightly. But after giving my family and friends samples of my creations and receiving such good feedback, I decided to create 3 solid fragrances and form my LLC in November 2019. Eventually, I launched Urban GLŌ® online in April 2020 – selling homemade candles and other home decor & self care items. In November 2023, I opened my storefront location in Union, NJ.

Urban GLŌ shop has an inviting atmosphere that showcases all of our handmade candles. Plus, our candle making events give people from all walks of life a change to connect and create their own custom candle. This journey with starting my business from a place of hurt, confusion, and being uncertain of my future has transformed into something of my wildest dreams!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

The hardest times initially was sourcing quality materials to create my candles. I wanted to make sure that I created the most eco-friendly and budget conscious candle. Creating my candle line came with both challenges to craft the perfect fragrances but yet a sense of ease. Candles truly bring me peace so any hard times didn’t last very long.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I am proud of the fact that I created my brand from my kitchen stove to now having my own storefront location within a matter of four years. My company stands out because we ensure that our candles are of the highest quality, using premium materials and fragrances. Also, besides having an online presence, we offer an amazing in-person candle shopping and candle making experience! I can confidently say that I handcraft the best smelling candles around. My specialty is giving people an aromatic experience like no other.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?

I always suggest that my fellow entrepreneurs make time to decompress from the grind. No matter how ambitious I am, I always carve out time for myself to prevent “burn out”. Use your NO. You can’t commit to everything or please everyone so be sure to carve out some ME time in between all of the goals you are trying to accomplish. A reset does the body good! Whether it’s taking a mini vacay every 6 weeks or use one day out of the week to decompress – you are entitled to that!
