Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Spampinato.
Hi Rob, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music has always been a cornerstone of my life. Growing up, my dad was a drummer, and our house was frequently filled with the sounds of his band practices. At the age of five, I picked up the guitar but quickly quit because my fingers hurt. It wasn’t until I was 13, inspired by a close friend who started playing guitar that I decided to give it another try. My parents were incredibly supportive, providing me with top-notch equipment and an excellent teacher.
Fast forward a decade, I went to college for music, and later had the opportunity to tour the United States and perform with several successful groups. When I turned 30, I shifted my focus to behind-the-scenes work to spend more time with my infant son. I opened a recording studio and began writing for other artists. I also formed a high-end event group that enjoyed considerable success during this period.
In 2017, I founded Rob’s School of Music, a boutique music school offering personalized lessons for all instruments, catering to students of all ages and skill levels. Since its inception, we’ve taught over 65,000 music lessons, helping countless students achieve their musical dreams.
In 2020, I launched a YouTube channel, @robsschoolofmusic, dedicated to accessible guitar education and interviews with world-class musicians. This platform allows my followers to learn from me and hear the stores of legendary, and it has grown to over 143,000 subscribers. In 2022, I published my first book, “This Book Shreds,” which quickly became an Amazon bestseller.
I’m thrilled to continue sharing my passion for music through teaching, creating, and inspiring others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has definitely had its ups and downs. Choosing a career in music comes with its challenges. I’ve had tours get canceled, promoters refuse to pay the agreed fee, and most recently, I’ve dealt with the ripple effects of the pandemic. All of the gigs were canceled, so I dove headfirst into my school. We shifted our classes to virtual about 10 days before the whole world shut down, providing incredible tools and support to ensure a seamless transition for all our students.
During an 18-month stretch from 2020 through 2021, we not only sustained Rob’s School of Music but also expanded beyond our New York metropolitan base, teaching students across the entire United States. Throughout it all, my mantra was “keep going.” I knew that success would only be a few steps away as long as I never stopped.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My professional life straddles multiple worlds. At my core, I am a creative artist. As a lifelong musician, I have been creating art since a very young age. This passion has now evolved into the art of education, allowing me to share my life’s work with future generations. I flex my creative muscles through the content I create across various social channels, handling everything in-house—from scriptwriting, music creation and filming to production, editing, and post-production. I wear many hats and wear them all effectively.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
My brick-and-mortar school and content production studio is located in Suffern, New York, right on the New York-New Jersey border. This prime location gives us access to a diverse range of communities. I love this area because it maintains a small-town vibe while bustling as a commuter town. Growing up here and attending Suffern High School, it feels incredibly special and heartwarming to be known as the “music guy” in my hometown.
