Today we’d like to introduce you to Randy Luna
Hi Randy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in the vibrant heartbeat of NYC’s Lower East Side, among a tapestry of cultures woven tightly by the strength of resilient Dominican women. My grandmother, Victoriana Tolentino, was the golden thread holding us together, my shining armor and soulful guide; her Spanish whispers became my Spanglish lullaby. As the eldest sibling, I often wore the cloak of fatherhood, a role stitched with both pride and conflict, while the true fathers in my life unraveled like loose threads.
Fast forward to my late teens: the rhythm at home became discordant as my stepfather’s alcohol addiction intensified. To break free from the chaos, I choreographed my life to stay busy, creating a vibrant escape from the turmoil. My schedule overflowed like a well-styled wardrobe—training in acting and movement, performing on stage, and stepping into my role as a peer educator at Teatro El Puente. All this while balancing college as a 17-year-old, pursuing a double major in Business Management and Theater, with each commitment a bold stitch in the fabric of my journey.
My days overflowed with rehearsals and performances, opening doors to becoming a teaching artist and choreographing for independent artists, where my love for fashion design began to intertwine with my creative path. My designs captivated stylists and photographers, sparking a vibrant fusion of movement and imagery that celebrated all genders. What began with dynamic editorials has blossomed into press recognition for my brand, Randy Luna.
As fashion flows through my veins, its patterns trace back to my mother, whose seamstress visits in my childhood now hold great significance. There, I watched her visions come to life—transforming into bold, embellished high-shoulder blazers and intricate appliqué creations, each piece a testament to her artistry and my heritage.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t been a smooth dance; it hasn’t always been golden. One of the first hurdles I faced as a child was grappling with the weight of generational curses. Alcohol addiction cast a shadow over my family, and I learned early that “a house is not a home” carried a deeper meaning for me. While I questioned the notion of “there’s no place like home,” I felt the silence around this struggle linger like an uninvited guest. While I pursued my dreams in the arts, home felt like a boxing ring, with a loved one’s addiction as the relentless opponent, always waging war against my spirit.
Yet, I was fortunate to discover an “outlet” in the arts—a vibrant escape that became my own yellow brick road. It offered me a sanctuary, a chance to express and explore beyond the confines of my reality, even if just for a few hours.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In my professional journey as an artist and creative, I wear many hats—actor, stylist, creative director, designer and choreographer—but I am currently recognized as a designer of jewelry and wardrobe. My specialty lies in crafting avant-garde pieces that celebrate individuality and innovation.
I have a passion for upcycling and working with metal, approaching design with movement, sculpture, art, and versatility in mind. My creations are not just accessories; they are statement pieces that stand alone as conversational art. I find inspiration in life, people, stories, and architecture.
One of my recent impactful projects was designing The Sustainable Capsule Collection, which reflects years of dreaming and hard work. I transformed Target shopping bags into a lifestyle wardrobe, creating vests, trench coats, kilts, dresses, bubble coats, and various bags. #ReUse #TakePart #LiveOn. I also produced a spec ad/commercial (https://www.instagram.com/p/C_zIbBDP5T5/) featuring the collection, brought to life in collaboration with an incredible team of artists of color, representing my diverse background in dance, acting, reality TV, teaching, and fashion. Filming in my hometown, the Lower East Side, reminded me of the power of community and collaboration. Together, we can inspire each other and explore sustainable, creative solutions.
To my amazing team, thank you for believing in this project and sharing your time, talents, and light. Your presence made all the difference; you touched this project with your aura and magic.
Lately, I have been reflecting on the strong community and support system I’ve built within and outside the entertainment industry. This network has been instrumental in my growth and success. #TeamWorkMakesTheDreamWork. Ultimately, my unique perspective sets me apart—embracing our differences truly enriches the creative landscape.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I’m thrilled to launch my first sterling silver collection of rings for my fashion brand, bringing a touch of elegance and edge to stores near you. I envision the doors of The Met Gala and CFDA swinging open, inviting my designs to the spotlight. In the realm of acting, I’ve been fortunate to receive ongoing audition requests, and now it’s time to turn those opportunities into bookings for commercials and films!
