Today we’d like to introduce you to R. Scott Edwards.
R. Scott, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My Life has been a series of chapters; Chapter One: my early Home life was un-steady and challenging. Chapter Two: That led to early need for independence and going to work at age 15. Finding I was fired from most of the many jobs I tried, it seemed evident that being self-employed was a path for me. Chapter Three: I opened my first small construction company at age 17; and at age 20 another small music company. Chapter Four: My true success came at age 24 when I opened this country’s 12th full-time comedy club…Laughs Unlimited.
I took the success and money from that adventure and opened two restaurants, two art galleries, and two additional comedy clubs. I got married and divorced, had an amazing Son, and played hard. As things settled a bit, I took some some small side trips as an entrepreneur and built & operated a submarine in Monterey and purchased a beach shack in Hawaii. I authored two books, produced three TV shows and several large concerts.
I tried to stay busy…
My next Chapter (Five) was moving away from all this and semi-retiring at age 44. I opened a travel agency and started working for the FORD company as a Fleet Director. Different because for the first time in a couple decades, I worked for someone else. Chapter Six, I trained myself and opened a mid-size insurance brokerage and built it into a 1/2 million dollar operation. My final Chapter was to retire, and finally travel and have fun golfing with my Bride of 26 years…Jill.
The chapters in my life may seem common; but for me it has been an amazing adventure. And now I spend every day making this last adventure/chapter as full as I can. We recently visited London, safaried in Kenya Africa, and regularly golf in Hawaii. Life is good…embrace it and make the most of all the chapters in your life.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No such things as a smooth road in anyones life. Yes, I have had successes and money; but I have also gone through a nasty divorce that cost me dearly, I have been Bankrupt twice, sued, survived several audits, threatened, and in many ways challenged all along the way. Sadly, there are many people, and even the Government who don’t like to see you be independent and succeed. There are MANY barriers to success. I learned at an early age that to succeed you must perceiver, be consistent & persistent, and believe in yourself. And you WILL fail from time to time….I have so many times and in so many ways. But it is how you respond to those failures that defines you.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Now that I am retired, I needed to focus my energies on something artistic. After writing a book that my Bride said no one would ever read…I started a podcast. This was back before Covid and is now in its 6th year. I get a chance to share my story and all the amazing people I got to work with in the entertainment industry. My podcast Standup Comedy “Your Host & MC” is a huge success. Heard all over the world, over 250,000 downloads, and still getting approx. 2,500 downloads a week. It has been a thrill, fun, and a real learning experience.
I took what I learned and created two other podcast for myself (another short-form comedy podcast “Comedy Appeteasers” and a Children’s podcast “Aawk’s Amazing Adventures”), and I produce a podcast for a company: The Wilson Method called “How to Talk to Humans”.
These have all been audio podcast (as God made them); but there is a big push for video podcast…so this month i am launching the video podcast “Tag Team Talent Podcast” on Spotify & YouTube. It will celebrate the Variety Arts using videos submitted from around the world. I have had videos sent in from Nairobi, Panama, Indonesia, India, and More! The “Tag Team” aspect comes from me having a different Co-Host on every show…..Fun!
Be sure to check it out, and it you have a talent? Visit www.tagteamtalentsearch.com
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
As explained earlier, it is important to believe in yourself, be strong and have fortitude, and understand that it won’t always be easy; that mistakes/failures will be made & happen. So, have a dream, be resilient, work hard, and go after the things that you enjoy and make you happy.
I kind’a jumped over a very important truth….it takes lots of Hard Work, nothing comes easy. Which is good. If you achieve things to easily, then you won’t appreciate the success of that moment. The more difficult the work, the more challenges overcome, the more you sweat…The more magnificent your success will be.
