Today we’d like to introduce you to Piper Ferrari
Hi Piper, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Piper, I’m 24, and I’ve been a freelance designer for the past four(ish) years.
Design is something I sort of stumbled into, and was never necessarily a part of my immediate plan.
I come from a pretty big family (oldest of 6) with young parents. Growing up in a chaotic environment like that led me to do whatever I could to hustle and move out as soon as possible. I was always pretty creative as a kid, so naturally I was super drawn to the idea of making money doing creative stuff as soon as I learned that was on option.
From 16-21 I always worked two jobs. I constantly jumped from restaurant to restaurant, did freelance photography along the way, and did my best to get my hands on any sort of work I could in the creative world- whether I was qualified or not. I figured if I had a computer and youtube, there wasn’t anything I couldn’t do (I still live by this, btw).
For a while, I was doing freelance photography and working as a studio assistant for an abstract painter by the name of Max Makewell. After the job with him ended when I was 20, I thought it would be a good idea to teach myself front end development as I figured diving into tech would be a way to make solid money. Turns out my brain doesn’t work that logically, but somewhere along the way I found the work of Roy Crantson, became completely enamored in that style of design, and not too long after I got hired at a PR agency as a jack-of-all-trades in house creative.
After about nine months with that company, I realized I could make way more money just doing all of those things myself, so that’s what I did, and that’s what I’ve been doing for the past four years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My upbringing was pretty tough, and that certainly left a lasting impact on me as an adult, but I am thankful in a way, because I’m not sure I would be the same person or have the drive I have had I not lived the life I have lived.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do art direction and design, mostly in the music industry. I also play in a band. I work on a lot of merchandise and album covers for upcoming artists. I think what sets me apart from a lot of people on the design side of things is that I’m in a band as well, so I really understand the artists I’m working with on that level.
I think I’m the most proud of the stuff I do for my own band. It’s a passion project in every sense of the way, and I get full creative control.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
It’s hard to say! I think the biggest thing that has everyone on the edge of their seat is AI. Taking the progression of that day by day, I know a lot of artists are worried about it.
