Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Sutterfield
Hi Patricia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The whole reason I got into jewelry was truly due to the lack of shopping in my home town. I wanted a necklace that I couldn’t find in our local stores. After a day of going store to store, I decided I could just make it myself, I brought some wire, chain and glue and made my own necklace. To my surprise during a night out I received so many compliments. One friend asked if I could make her one which turned into 3 friends and so on. From there it snowballed into a full hobby for a few years. I dabbled in wire wrapping, copper electroforming and silversmithing before eventually getting into goldsmithing. Not only was I falling in love with goldsmithing but I really enjoyed owning a business. I loved all aspects, designing the piece, getting to know clients, marketing, taking photos, even the admin side.
It took a few years for me to muster up the courage to quit my good job to go to school. I was in my mid twenties and I was really scared about starting over.
I went to school in the states during 2020, right when the world shut down. 1 month into my course and before I had to head back to Canada. Only to return with no job, no education and no plan- it was scary to say the least.
The months that followed were tough. Trying to learn as much as i could with no mentor or any form of guidance. I ended up diving really deep into online learning. I read every forum, website, blog and books about goldsmithing as I could.
In 2022 i decided it was time to go back to the states for schooling where I learnt hand engraving. This was a skill I had wanted to learn for years. This component really helped me shape my niech and really develop my style. Offering one of a kind engagement rings and wedding bands with hand engraved detailing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting my own business has been anything but smooth. It was a very hard
Path to pave all on my own. There are
So many things to know with goldsmithing, it was hard to know where to start. I never had a mentor who worked in the industry so I spent a lot of time and money on
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I creating one of a kind engagement rings and wedding bands. Focusing mainly on hand engraved detailing. Which I think sets me apart from mainstream styles. I try to bring elements of traditional and contemporary to create pieces that are truly unique.
Each piece is handmade by me which makes it truly one of a kind to the individual who wears it, as no two piece can be fully replicated. I am most proud of my hand engraving. Ever since I started goldmsithing I dreamt about hand engraving but always thought it would be something I could never do, I still have so much more to learn, but im proud of my progress so far!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Receiving an appreciation email from a client after they have received their piece. Nothing makes me more giddy and excited knowing that their piece is loved and exactly what they wanted.
Its always a bit nerve-wracking mailing a finish items. Selling items mainly online comes with its own set of obstacles. Your main points of communication are video chat and phone, its different then seeing in person. It always gives me butterfiles knowing the person is about to see it for the first time. I put so much time and effort into it, a little bit of my heart goes out with it. I find so much happiness when I receive a message from a client expressing the piece has been received and that they are over joyed with the finished result and they its everything they could of imagined.
