Today we’d like to introduce you to Olusegun Daramola
Hi Olusegun , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Thank you for the opportunity to share my story. My journey began in the culturally rich and spiritually profound Yorúbàland, Nigeria. Growing up, I was deeply immersed in the traditions and teachings of Ifá and Òrìsà spirituality. This early exposure laid the foundation for my lifelong dedication to understanding and practicing these ancient spiritual systems.
From a young age, I was fascinated by the wisdom embedded in our cultural heritage. I spent countless hours listening to the stories and teachings of the elders, absorbing the lessons of our ancestors. This passion for knowledge and spiritual growth led me to pursue formal training and initiation into the Ifá priesthood, becoming a Babaláwo.
My journey was not without challenges. Navigating the complexities of spiritual training while balancing the demands of modern life required immense dedication and resilience. However, each challenge reinforced my commitment and deepened my understanding of the spiritual path.
As I advanced in my spiritual practice, I felt a strong calling to share the wisdom of Ifá and Òrìsà spirituality with a broader audience. This led to the establishment of my spiritual community named ORÍ AWAKENING, where I, along with other elders, offer guidance and teachings to the community.
I have embraced modern platforms to reach a global audience. I have conducted numerous workshops, seminars, and conferences, and have authored several books and podcasts. These endeavors are aimed at demystifying our spiritual practices and making them accessible to those seeking wisdom and enlightenment.
One of my core beliefs is the importance of community and mutual support. This belief has driven me to create spaces, both physical and virtual, where individuals can come together to learn, grow, and support one another. Whether through monthly Ifá divinations, one-on-one classes, or communal discussions, I strive to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and connection.
Today, I continue to balance my roles as a spiritual leader, educator, and advocate for cultural preservation. Each day is an opportunity to learn, teach, and contribute to the spiritual well-being of my community. I am deeply grateful for the journey thus far and remain committed to the path of enlightenment and service.
In essence, my story is one of dedication to preserving and sharing the rich spiritual heritage of Ifá and Òrìsà. It is a journey marked by continuous learning, teaching, and a profound commitment to helping others navigate their spiritual paths.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating the complexities of spiritual training while balancing the demands of modern life required immense dedication and resilience. However, each challenge reinforced my commitment and deepened my understanding of the spiritual path.
One of the initial challenges I faced was the conflict between traditional spiritual practices and the pressures of modern society. Growing up in a world where the pace of life is continuously accelerating, finding time to engage deeply with the ancient practices and teachings of Ifá and Òrìsà was a formidable task. The rigorous demands of spiritual training often meant long hours of study, meditation, and rituals, which needed to be balanced with the expectations of modern education and societal responsibilities.
Another significant challenge was the skepticism and misconceptions surrounding African spirituality. Many people, both within and outside of my community, held misunderstandings or harbored prejudices about the Ifá and Òrìsà traditions. Overcoming these misconceptions required patience, perseverance, and a commitment to educating others. I spent countless hours engaging in conversations, hosting workshops, and writing articles to demystify these spiritual practices and highlight their profound wisdom and relevance.
Financial constraints also posed a significant hurdle. Pursuing spiritual training often meant investing in books, materials for rituals, and travel to meet with elders and teachers. There were times when resources were scarce, and I had to find creative ways to sustain my training while meeting basic needs. These experiences taught me invaluable lessons in resourcefulness and the importance of community support.
Balancing personal life with spiritual commitments was another layer of complexity. The path of a Babaláwo demands not just intellectual understanding but also a deep personal transformation. This process often required sacrifices in personal relationships and leisure activities. Maintaining a supportive network of family and friends who understood and respected my journey was crucial, but it was not always easy. The spiritual path can be isolating, and there were moments of loneliness and self-doubt.
Additionally, establishing Orí Awakening and building a spiritual community came with its own set of challenges. It required not just spiritual leadership but also administrative skills, financial management, and a vision for growth. Ensuring that the temple was a welcoming and inclusive space for all, while maintaining the integrity of the teachings, required constant effort and adaptability.
Despite these challenges, each obstacle served to strengthen my resolve and deepen my understanding of the spiritual path. The trials I faced were not just barriers but also opportunities for growth and learning. They taught me humility, patience, and the importance of perseverance. Each setback was a lesson in resilience, and each success was a testament to the power of dedication and faith.
Today, as I reflect on my journey, I am grateful for the challenges that have shaped me. They have not only made me a better spiritual leader but also a more compassionate and understanding human being. My experiences have reinforced my commitment to sharing the wisdom of Ifá and Òrìsà with others and supporting them on their own spiritual journeys.
In essence, my journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the transformative potential of facing and overcoming challenges. It is a reminder that the path to spiritual enlightenment is not easy, but it is profoundly rewarding.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Absolutely. For those who are just beginning their journey in Ifá and Òrìsà Spirituality, my foremost piece of advice is to approach this path with humility and patience. The depth of wisdom contained within these traditions is vast and cannot be fully grasped overnight. It is essential to cultivate a mindset of continuous learning and growth.
One key piece of advice I would offer is to seek guidance from knowledgeable and respected elders or mentors within the community. Their experience and insights are invaluable, and they can help you navigate the complexities of spiritual practices and teachings. Establishing a strong foundation with their support will serve you well as you progress on your journey.
Additionally, immerse yourself in both the theoretical and practical aspects of Ifá and Òrìsà Spirituality. Read extensively, participate in rituals, and engage in community activities. Practical experience is just as important as intellectual understanding, and it helps to ground your knowledge in real-world applications.
When I was starting out, I wish I had fully understood the importance of balancing spiritual pursuits with the demands of everyday life. It’s easy to become deeply absorbed in spiritual practices, but it’s equally important to maintain a sense of balance. Your spiritual growth should enhance your daily life, not detract from it. Learning to integrate spiritual practices into your everyday routine can help you stay grounded and focused.
Another thing I wish I had known earlier is the significance of personal discipline and consistency. Regular practice, whether it’s through divination, meditation, or other rituals, is crucial in building a strong spiritual foundation. Consistency helps to deepen your connection with the spiritual realm and reinforces your commitment to the path.
Lastly, be open to the transformative nature of this journey. Embrace the changes and challenges you encounter along the way, as they are integral to your growth. Each experience, whether positive or challenging, holds valuable lessons that contribute to your spiritual evolution.
In summary, approach your spiritual journey with humility, seek guidance from experienced mentors, balance your spiritual and daily life, practice consistently, and embrace the transformative process. These principles will help you navigate the path with greater ease and wisdom.
