Today we’d like to introduce you to Moses Ndubuzo
Moses, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My Artist Journey.
I’ll break it down.
Early Beginnings:
I didn’t start creating art as a child, but my passion was ignited when I stumbled upon a beautiful art on the wall at an Access Bank in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. The colors and beauty of the paintings captivated me, and I knew in that moment that I wanted to become an artist. Although I had started drawing in secondary school, this experience solidified my resolve to pursue art seriously.
Formative Experiences:
The ‘Life in My City Art Festival’ in Enugu, Nigeria, was a turning point in my artistic journey. In 2018, I sold a painting at the highest price I had ever achieved at that time, which boosted my confidence and reinforced my beliefs.
Artistic Influences:
I draw inspiration from numerous artists, including Clement Maduako Nwafor, Ike Gerald, Ugwu Paschal, Aniefiok Idim, and Jenny Saville, among others. Their works and mentorship have significantly impacted my artistic growth.
Education and Training:
I studied Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, majoring in painting from 2014 to 2018. Additionally, I have participated in various workshops, which have been instrumental in shaping my artistic journey.
Career Milestones:
Notable exhibitions include ‘Seconds before happiness’ at Didi Museum, Lagos (2023), ‘Life in My City Art Festival’ (Enugu, Nigeria), and ‘The show will go on’ at Harmer Contemporary Art Gallery, London (2023).
Artistic Evolution:
My style has transformed from realistic to stylized figurative paintings. I’ve come to realize that creating something unique and personal is more fulfilling for me than replicating reality. This evolution has been a journey of self-discovery, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.
Current Focus:
I’m currently focused on creating new works, participating in exhibitions, and selling my pieces. My ultimate goal is to have my first solo exhibition soon.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Challenges along the way;
The biggest challenges I’ve faced include accessing art materials, maintaining consistency, and creating works that resonate with both myself and my audience. However, self-belief, perseverance, and guidance have helped me overcome these obstacles. Seeing people connect with my art and appreciate its value has been a significant triumph.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
“I am a visual artist (painter), i create stylized figurative paintings that explore everyday life experiences, inspired by my personal journey, family, environment, and imagination. I’m known for my unique woven-like technique, symbolizing the interconnectedness of human existence. My art combines impressionist and expressionist influences, working primarily with acrylic and oil. I’m proud of developing a distinctive style that initiates profound dialogue, encouraging viewers to find strength, hope, and optimism in the intricate nature of life. My art sets me apart by weaving individual stories into a larger fabric of humanity, celebrating our shared experiences.”
