Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Bollero-ray
Hi Melissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began tufting in 2021 after searching for a creative outlet, and I took to it quickly. I became enthralled with the endless possibilities and directions you can take it. I started my business Melspace Creative shortly after, selling my rugs at local craft markets and pop ups. In 2024, I began teaching tufting workshops where students learn how to make their own rugs from start to finish. The workshops have been so rewarding and I love seeing what each student creates and how everyone’s brains work, creatively! I have continued to enjoy creating my own rugs to sell locally, as well as diving into creating portraits of pets for commission, and hope to continue to gain momentum with workshops as well as my personal tufting practice going into next year.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting and running a business with a creative mind is no easy feat. I’d love to stick to the parts i enjoy; the creating and freedom of expression, as well as the relationship art fosters with my local community, but the reality of running a business is taxes, state regulations, paperwork and lots of promotion. It does feel like you’re wearing all the hats, and it can definitely feel overwhelming. My goal has always been to create a balance and never strive for perfection.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known for fun, nostalgic rug art. I always want to be the most colorful booth at any market, and try to bring a playful mindset to anything I create. I have tried to set myself apart by leaning into my love for pop art, food art and nostalgia. I love making fried eggs, pizza slices, and taking classic vinyl album covers to turn into rug wall art.
How do you think about happiness?
I love uninterrupted time in my studio with a frame full of rug ideas and a good audiobook. I find the tufting aspect of creating this art the most cathartic and satisfying. When a piece I love sells at a market and I can make that connection with someone who loves it as much as I do, that feels like the cherry on top!
