Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Hamilton
Hi Matthew, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I originally started out shooting music videos for musicians I knew. Then I met my mentor Peter Hurley who got me interested in shooting headshots for actors and professionals in the corporate world. From that point on, I knew that was what I wanted to do professionally, and I have been doing that ever since. That was around 10 years ago at this point!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think when you own your own business it is never a smooth road fully. Some weeks, months, and years are smoother than others. Sometimes you have a lot of work and sometimes you don’t have any. The important thing is to always look ahead and realize everything comes in waves. Like most businesses, when the pandemic happened and everything shut down, it became a little scary. For the first time in my professional life as a photographer, I wasn’t working at all and I had no control over that at all. That was the biggest, clear struggle for me and my business in the last 10 years.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional portrait photographer. I have a studio in Philadelphia where I do most of my work. I specialize in headshots which leaves me photographing all types of people every week. Sometimes it will be an actor looking for new headshots to submit for jobs, or sometimes it will be someone looking to update their LinkedIn photo to help in their job search. I also shoot staff headshots for local companies that would like a consistent look across all of their employee headshots.
In my headshot work, I am most proud of all of the different ways I see my clients using their photos. In the last year alone, I have had a mixture of my work showing up on billboards, book covers, in high profile articles as well as being used in album covers. Seeing my work out there in the world is incredibly rewarding no matter where the photos are being used but recently there have definitely been a lot of instances where my work is being seen a lot out in the world. That is great to see!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
As a young kid, my family went on a good amount of vacations together. It became a little bit of a tradition for us. This allowed me to experience different parts of the world I would never have been to otherwise. Now I tend to hunker down and focus on my business which leaves me not traveling as much, but I still look back on those childhood trips fondly.
