Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Moretti
Hi Mary, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Everything started because I needed un outlet where I could be fearless. I experienced Bullying since early age but somehow I knew I was good at dancing and when I was up there performing no one could tell me anything. At the beginning I could not understand why people felt the need to be mean with me. I was only 6 years old when it started, what could possibly have done to those people. But then I used it as my motivation to keep going. I had to prove them wrong and I did. Most importantly I had to prove myself they were wrong and I did. So after many years of fighting the monsters in my head a little girl from south Italy moved all the way to New York. Despite everyone predictions which of course was me failing in 9 year here I teach, I work freelance as Choreographer for emerging Artist, dancer and I started a new carrier in Modeling. And this Is just the beginning.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Was not a smooth at all. Like I said I was the favorite target for bullying so growing up I had to do lot of work on myself specially when I started suffering with panic attacks. One side of me was suffering the other side was pushing me to keep going. You know when people tell you “listen to your guts” do it don’t be afraid even if is telling you the exact opposite of what everyone thinks of you. My main struggle was trying not to believe them, especially when I started having problems at work. I have always been curious and I consider myself a forever student. Even if I was a working Dancer I always wanted to Learn more, practice more, to see how far I could go. But as you can Imagine the dance community can be very competitive especially in Italy where meritocracy is un utopia. So I found my self often needed to proof my worth to people that where not worth my energy and time, and this led me to a huge turning point in my career for the first time I even thought to quit. It was no fun anymore and that was the reason I started dancing in the first place. But one day my father came to me and told me hi got a ticket to go visit my grandma in America for the summer, I thought why not, so June 18 2016 I flew to Newark airport little did I know that trip will change my life forever. After two month taking classes at Broadway dance center I knew that was not enough. There was a whole new world to see so I never took the plane back home and at the age of 27 years old I started from zero again. Got a job, paid dance classes, got, my first place in Brooklyn, found a lots new friends that now are my family, found a support system I never had before. Yes the fist two year where challenging, I had to learn how to “ride” New York we all know how crazy this City can be, but somehow I did and I did not quit.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work as freelancer Dancer/ choreographer/ model currently working on my own business/ brand. My work is a mix of technique ,expression and performance. I have been working very hard to fund my voice as un artist and at the begging I thought I had to label myself in a specific category. Like HipHop ,street jazz or commercial etc etc. But the true is I started to speak my voice when I stated to bland all my knowledge together. I have study the foundation and from there I let my creativity expand. My work is a mix of grooves, techniques and high energy performance. The goals is to connect with people through movement. And I am very proud of this and even more proud because people start to recognize that. Especially when I teach I push my students to work hard and most of the time the ask me to do private lessons to know more about it. I love to connect movement with the camera work with videographer that loves to create art and story telling visuals. When I work with artist they often tell me I bring their childhood dreams to life and this makes me so happy because all I do is to fulfill my deepest dreams as well and create as always been a strong part of myself.
A few years a got I started navigating the modeling industry as well and little by little I am getting my rewards been a dancer help me a lot.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Be true to yourself, don’t listen to anyone because no one will understand you. Do it anyway be courageous. Take care of yourself and do not sell yourself for less just because you think you don’t have enough experience. Set your boundaries from the beginning the right people will respect you. Sick for help for support you can’t do all alone. There is always room for improvement but where you are right now is more the enough. Find the right Mentors the one who recognize your quality and want you to shine even more. I need to give a shout out to my coach Pepz, because of him I discovered self-development, which if you care enough to know more about, is the one thing that will help improve in every area of your life.
