Today we’d like to introduce you to Maccabee Griffin
Hi Maccabee, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From day one, my life’s journey has been a mystery, even to me. If you had told me in my youth that I would achieve what I have so far, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’ve been fortunate to participate in a documentary, serve my country for nearly a decade, voice act in various global projects, speak at UNC’s School of Arts, create a podcast for newly published authors, and consult on an indie film last year. These opportunities came my way because, by the grace of God, my name reached the right people at the right time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been a mixture of highways and country roads, each with its potholes, big and small, often caused by my insecurities and self-sabotage. However, I’m improving as I get older. There are still days when doubt and fear fill my head with lies, but like many other creative people grappling with mental health, I take it one day at a time and trust the Lord to guide me, even when I can’t see the bigger picture.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
From day one, I’ve always been an entertainer, relishing the spotlight. But over time, I’ve come to realize that helping others shine has helped me define my path. It may sound odd, but hear me out. Over the years, I’ve become quite skilled at improvising stories with others—some serious, some ridiculous, but always entertaining. I decided to use this God-given gift to help people create better-developed characters. Anyone can write a great story, but if readers can’t connect with the characters, the story won’t resonate.
I approach storytelling from an actor’s perspective rather than a writer’s. For instance, an indie author once asked me to read their script. I found it boring because I couldn’t connect with the characters and told them so. After meeting with the director and his writing team, they incorporated some of my ideas, rewrote the script, and a few months later, won first prize for best horror screenplay at an indie film festival. This is one of my favorite stories because I was able to help someone enhance their original work, making it more impactful and engaging.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
