Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucie Bulois.
Hi Lucie , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Photography has always been a cornerstone in my life, and I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in cameras; I went from using disposable film cameras as a child, to digital point and shoots as a teenager, to buying my first DSLR as a young adult. Living in NYC, I thought everything was captivating around me and I would spend all my free time capturing the city and its people. Street photography really is the art of noticing and it taught me a lot.
It’s only in 2018 when I got married that I realized I could make it a job. My wedding photographer offered to take me with her to a couple of weddings so I could build my portfolio, and I started posting these photos on Instagram, just to see if it would go somewhere. Everything went quite fast; just a few months later, I was able to quit my job and go full time with photography. It’s been the most fulfilling whirlwind ever since, with a business that has kept growing every year, and lots of cool experiences and accomplishments! I’m very grateful.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge by far has been to juggle this growing business with growing my tiny human :) I became a mom 2 years ago, and my workaholic self doesn’t have the same amount of time to dedicate to this business anymore. My deliveries are longer, I can’t attend all the events I’d like to go to, and there’s never enough time to complete all the projects I’m working on.
I love my son more than anything, and he brings me so much joy. But time management becomes completely different when you become a parent. Despite my apparent success, I always feel like I’m behind – so it’s been a work in progress adjusting my mindset and finding a good balance.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in photographing couples in love, either for their engagement photos or on their wedding day. Nothing cheesy and posed though; I try to capture them as candidly as possible, and to really get to know them so I can photograph them as genuinely as possible. To be a good wedding photographer, you really have to be a good people person, and make your subjects feel comfortable, as if they were with a friend. That is the #1 key to take good photos (more than equipment!)
Even if every couple is different (which keeps my job so interesting), my work is always emotion driven, a bit moody with a hint of nostalgia. The biggest compliment I get is when someone says they know the photo is from me as soon as they see it.
My biggest accomplishment though has been to be chosen in the Top 50 Destination Wedding Photo Worldwide by Junebug Weddings in 2024. That one was unreal! Definitely a life goal moment. And even if I sometimes feel it isn’t really deserved, I try to remember that I put a lot of work into this business (actual blood from falling at a wedding once, and actual tears – more than once!).
Who else deserves credit in your story?
As I was saying earlier, my own wedding photographer Liza Willey has a lot to do with my success. If she hadn’t taken me under her wing at the beginning, it would have been so much harder to build my wedding portfolio and get my own bookings. She really gave me an incredible chance, and I’ll always be grateful for her. On top of that, her work is truly inspiring – both how she poses people and how she plays with light.
The other person I have to thank for my success is honestly my husband. He’s been my #1 fan and supporter since the beginning. He’s the one who told me to quit my job to focus on photography, even if that meant he would have to be the sole breadwinner for a while. He’s been supporting my countless hours in front of the computer, my weekends away shooting weddings, and my nervous breakdowns when I get overwhelmed :)
