Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Tyler-szucki
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my business about 5 years ago. My daughter was about 3 months old and maternity leave just wasn’t cutting it. I had a camera for a few years before that and did a lot of outdoor photography with hiking/climbing/kayaking etc but never other people. I decided to upgrade my gear and make a go of making some extra cash on the side. Turns out I was pretty good at it and people enjoyed my services! I started working for tips and slowly increased my prices with time and I haven’t gone back to my original job since!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Putting yourself out there is probably one of the hardest and humbling experiences you can do. Being publically vulnerable and accepting that when you first start (especially with photography or other artistic talents) you won’t be amazing. But you have to put it out there if you want to get better. I remember the first session I did for my bestfriend and her kids, I thought to myself “I just can’t wait to not be new, I want to be known for my photography skills” but that dreams seemed impossible. But now, 5 years later, I can’t go to the grocery store without seeing a clinic or having someone stop me and said “oh my god you’re the photographer”. It is a wonderful thing to be recognized for something you have poured your heart into but it doesn’t come without disappointments and failures.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a wedding and lifestyle photographer, most known for my unique activities or things I do with my clients. I enjoy doing more of a date or interest session. Such as going on your boat, taking your dirt bikes out, going for ice cream, going snowboarding any type of activity that you enjoy doing together. I try and avoid the basic standing in the field smiling at the camera. I want to document you and your most authentic selves.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Waking up everyday and being grateful for your life. Money is never enough, nothing in life ever stays the same. But feeling like you’re excited and happy to start the day, having things that keep you busy is such a blessing. Few people get to live their dream jobs, the goal is not to lose sight of that. Do not chase the dollars, chase the dreams and the dollars will follow.
