Today we’d like to introduce you to LaShandra Logan.
Hi LaShandra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
At 34, I bravely faced my fear and embraced swim lessons with a local non-profit organization, launching my swimming journey.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey to conquer my fear of swimming has been quite an adventure! It wasn’t always easy, but I wanted to overcome my anxiety. On my first day of swim class, I remember feeling a mix of excitement and fear. When it came time for me to put my head underwater, I hesitated. The thought of inhaling water through my nose made me super nervous, and I imagined what it would be like to drown. It was really scary!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a swim instructor with the same nonprofit organization that taught me how to swim. I assist new students in becoming comfortable in the water and in understanding water safety. I demonstrate essential swimming techniques such as floating, breathing, and treading water, giving back to the community in the process.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
In the summer of 2023, I completed the American Red Cross course for Lifeguarding, which included CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid. This was also the first time I jumped into a depth of 13 feet. Prior to this, I had never gone deeper than 6 feet, so transitioning from 6 feet to 13 feet during lifeguard drills was a significant challenge for me. My peers were surprised, as they were unaware of my previous experience until I completed the course. Additionally, I have been interviewed by CNN about my swimming journey.
