Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Murta.
Hi Justin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a professional DJ. I think that I ended up being a DJ because of my love of music and my parents encouraging me to learn an instrument. My grandparents gave me a family violin and studied and learned throughout Elementary, Middle and High School. This lead to my career as a professional musician, first as a rapper and later as a song writer and producer. My entire career I have created my own opportunities, promoting my own shows, creating a company called the HipHop Handbook and finally relocating to Asia. Economically, it made the most sense to focus on DJing and when I returned to the United States, I found lots of opportunities and I am considered one of the top DJ’s on the West Coast of the United States.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, I’m certain there is never a “smooth” or “uncomplicated” road for any career path in the music industry, HA! I have had lots of struggles personally, first and foremost was financial. It was very hard in the beginning to get consistent opportunities to forge a living. Secondly, it was hard to maintain personal relationships. Distance and frequency of performance schedules really stressed everything. Finally, the hardest thing.. and what I still struggle with most to this day, are distractions. Distractions are so regular it is often impossible to avoid indulgence with them. You can easily find yourself on the struggle bus if you can not control your appetite for the temptations.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am known for my skills as a DJ. I specialize in that and have found a lot of joy in doing so. I am also known for some of my songs and my time as a rapper in a group called “The Rebelz” and a band known as “Global Heat.” I am most proud of the fact that I am a veteran in the industry and have enjoyed a career of more than 20+ years. Longevity in the music business in my opinion is rare as hens teeth, HA! I think this is due to my creativity not only as an artist or creator, but as an entrepreneur. I manage to navigate the business waters and stay afloat.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
First and foremost, my spiritual relationship and aligning myself with the highest values I can imagine is by far what matters most and if my overall goal. Close second is my beautiful family! I work very hard to ensure their needs are met and I am able to give them mentorship and guidance and finally, my clients and all of the people who charge me with duties and keep me employed. These are the 3 things that matter the most!
