Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Sherwood
Hi Jim, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am originally from Boston, Massachusetts, and went to school in Pittsburgh where I was able to play College Basketball for 5 years. I’ve always had a passion for technology and art, but didn’t start creating myself until 7 years ago.
I got started with The Canvas Project a little over 8 years ago after I had just moved to Florida. After working for companies like Apple, Aflac & AT&T I decided to start a brand of my own.
The goal of the brand was to create unique custom art, while supporting art in education.
Since our start, we have evolved into a brand that still does art, runs educational programs for students focusing on Art, Technology, and Entrepreneurship, E-Commerce and we host our own paint events.
We focus heavily on being active in our community and finding new, innovative ways to connect with the youth.
Starting The Canvas Project has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would compare the journey similar to the stock market. Definitely not a smooth road, but you have to look at your progress over time.
Success for each individual comes at different times, and so often we compare our success or growth to what others are doing or have done.
Like a great stock on a graph or a chart. If you analyze it, its success is measured over long periods of time. Ups and downs will always be happen, but the goal is to create a positive long term trend for growth.
Some of the biggest struggles for us have been our location, being in a smaller city like Tallahassee can be tough sometimes. Others have been funding opportunities, and simply creating a sustainable business model.
It’s taken a long time to get to where we are now, but we’ve strived to try and just do better each year. Being able to adapt to what the economy doing and what is going on in the world is huge.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are most known for our hand-painted custom sneakers. Our clients provide us with an all white pair of sneakers all the way from Nike’s to Adidas to a pair of football cleats or bowling shoes.
We then customize them according to special request. Some projects feature company logos, designs for special events, or even company raffles or auctions.
We’ve had our work featured on many platforms like our local news channels, in the NCAA March Madness Men’s Basketball Tournament, and more.
We specialize in our work with kids. Over the years we’ve ran giveaways and even organized contests where kids have been able to design their own sneakers.
We’re most proud of the fact that we still even exist as a business. 8 years has flown by, but when I sit down and actually think about it… 8 years is a significant amount of time. Truly glad to still be here.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I definitely enjoyed traveling around playing basketball as a kid. Being able to see places where I wasn’t from with friends and family while playing basketball (when it was fun, at that age) was awesome.
