Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Nields.
Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a hairstylist in the suburbs of Philly. After graduating from i college with my degree in Marketing and HR I went to cosmetology school. I was interviewing for jobs and nothing felt right. I wasn’t made to sit in an office all day. I started cosmetology school at The Salon Professional Academy in September 2018 and graduated in September 2019. I started my career behind the chair in October 2019. I took extra classes and found all the education I needed to be successful behind the chair. Though my parents didn’t support my initial decision to go to cosmetology school, once they saw I was happy with my career they changed their mind. I worked at a well known salon with multiple locations in Montgomery and Berks counties, but after going to my manager and the HR personnel about harassment from a coworker, i quickly realized I wasn’t being taken seriously and nothing would be done. I left that salon in February 2020 to move and work closer to my family. With the help of my parents, sister, and a family friend i found a small salon to work with. I started there March 2020 and left in December 2020 as it was just not a great fit for me. I have found my salon home in December 2020 when I started at Salon 555! I found amazing coworkers, a great boss, and an environment i was comfortable in and where I could grow. Salon 555 has recently merged with another local salon, which was nerve racking at first but once we combined and found our groove it has felt like I’ve worked with these women forever! We just moved back to our newly renovated salon and are so happy! I couldn’t thank my loyal clients, family, friends, and boss enough! They got me where I am today. Though I am still growing in my career, my clients keep me motivated to continue to push myself to be better.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. I’ve dealt with harassment, difficult leaders, learning to work with different personalities, a lot of change in a short amount of time, and learning to set boundaries and knowing when to walk away from situations that no longer serve me
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a hairstylist in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I focus on hair color and blonding. I am well known for my blondes and coloring skills. I’m most proud that I’ve built my book up from the ground myself, with the support of my parents, sister, fiance, friends, and awesome boss! I’m also most proud of making my family proud of my choice to be happy in my career rather than settling.
What sets me apart from other stylists is that I want to give my guests and anyone who sits in my chair the best salon experience. I want them to feel heard and confident. I love to help people feel better and look their best!
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I utilize social media to help build and maintain my book. Primarily I use Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook and try to stay up on trends as much as i can
