Today we’d like to introduce you to J-yo Of J-yo Productions
Hi J-yo, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started out at 16 as a freestyle battle rapper at House parties. I stopped doing that when I was about 20 years old due to fights and people punching me so I stopped battle rapping. Around 20 is when I started to work with other artists in my area my first producer would record me freestyling and mostly at this point I really didn’t know how to write a rap song or how it was structured. Around 24 years old I got with a second group in my area where I watched the producer do everything make beats, record us, perform live shows, and most importantly how a write and structure my poetry into a hip hop song. My group broke up around 28 years old when I got into a car accident and I was solo from that point out. It wasn’t until I was recovering from the car accident and I realized I wasn’t going to be able to be an electrician no more that I started studying how to market my music and I switched from Facebook to Instagram I’m doing really well with my music at this point. I’m excited on whats to come I’m currently building a team of people that specialize in the profession of marketing, mixing and mastering, and anything related to do with hip hop music in the creation of a song.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle for me along the way was when my group broke up when I was 28 years old. My group was opening for DMX at the time but I was in the hospital so I missed opening up for that show. So I’d say that the car accident on July 28th 2012 was my biggest obstacle. I had numerous amount of injuries, I died two times once in the ambulance and once in the helicopter on the way to the hospital in Philadelphia. They had to fly me to the Philadelphia #1 trauma hospital. I also have my right femur bone in my leg shattered in the 30 pieces and when I woke up and asked them if I was going to be able to walk all right and they said “chances are you’re never going to walk again and if you do walk you’ll walk with a severe limp”at that moment when you get told that news you have to decide what you’re going to do immediately I recommend don’t accept it like I did don’t let somebody tell you what you’re going to do show them what you could do and prove them wrong if you have to. That’s why my logo says “Never Give Up”and I refer to myself as THE #REALLIFEROCKY🥊
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m most proud of my ability to get to where I’ve gotten to this far without much investing in promotion or marketing. My music is a book of my life I can tell you three things with every song I wrote I could tell you what mood I was in, what was going on in my life at the time, and what I wanted to accomplish whether we’re still inspire somebody, let them know from my mistakes, and just trying to make every type of hip-hop song possible. I most proud of still being able to do music after 25 years I started at 16 I’m now 41 and it’s amazing how life comes full circle now I got a battle rap again for the past couple years after I stopped doing it when I was 16 but I continue to win so I’m happy. I really want to try to get away from the Battle rapper and back to writing about my life but people keep challenging me so when you’re tested you have to rise to the occasion. What sets me apart is how long I’ve been doing music, how real my music is, and my writing style. Over the years I developed a better writing style I never think I’m the best you could always get better and I try to this day to get better each song I write.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Yeah I’d like to share of that what I share with every artist and what I try to convey. Don’t matter how good you are or something it’s important to never think you’re the best and always remain humble. Try to help people and inspire people. You can never be the best how can you say you’re the best when you haven’t reached your full potential yet you could always get better and learn and develop. I try to stress this angle because of how long I’ve been doing music I always say I’m not the best but I’m the realest. I now refer to myself as THE #REALLIFEROCKY🥊
I do this because I’m from the Philadelphia area, I never back down from a challenge, and I will do anything to become champion. I also stand up for the people that are too afraid to say something but are right in what they’re saying I will say for them cuz I believe that no one is better than anybody else, I treat others how I want to be treated, and I never do things to other people that I wouldn’t want done to me. That is the best advice that I could give anybody I wish everybody the best of luck feel free to reach out to me on Instagram or anywhere I personally respond. Thank you guys for reading this I appreciate the support and remember to “Never Give Up”
