Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Joyner
Hi Haley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA, and my passion for music has been evident since the age of four. I was particularly drawn to the old-school songs my parents would play, admiring artists such as Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, and many other iconic figures. What captivated me about these artists was the uniqueness of their voices, the depth of emotion, and the evident effort they invested in each of their songs, as well as their masterful use of instrumentation. These qualities resonated with me and became aspects I aspired to incorporate into my own artistry.
I attended Franklin Learning Center High School, majoring in Vocal Performance and minoring in Musical Theatre. From 2017 to 2022, I studied at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts, where I received vocal lessons and theory classes. My most focused genres of music include, Neo-Soul, R&B, Jazz and Funk, but I appreciate and am open to exploring all genres, including music in different languages. I am a senior who attended the now closed school (formally known as University of the Arts), majoring in Vocal Performance and minoring in Music Business, Entrepreneurship & Technology, and am now attending Temple University as a transfer student and senior with a major in Jazz Performance. I have also rebranded myself as an artist, changing my name from Haley Joyner to Junee’ (my middle name).
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has definitely not been easy! I have faced many struggles from personal to financial. I’ve had many losses, moments of weakness and self doubt. But with the support and love from my amazing support system (family, friends, teachers, and mentors), my own resilience and ability to make a way out of no way, and most importantly …. GOD, I’ve been able to persevere and excel in all aspects of my life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My creative work encompasses vocals (both lead and background), songwriting, poetry, arranging, creative direction, and I am now expanding into recording/live sound production and vocal coaching/lessons. I recently released my first EP on all streaming platforms called “Dear Diary” along with many singles and am currently in the works of my first album. I also have my own band named “Junee’ and the Earthtones”, and we have performed at a couple of venues such as SoFar Sounds Philadelphia, The Hues People Live Recording Session, and a Direct-To- Vinyl recording with Leesta Vall Sound Recordings. Our next performance will be at Time Restaurant (1315 Sansom St, Philadelphia, PA, 19107) on September 9th, 2024!
What sets me apart is my commitment to being my most authentic and unapologetic self, both in my career and in everyday life. I take great pride in my ability to bring this authenticity into every space I enter and every interaction I have. This is a quality I deeply value and encourage in my potential clients, followers, and fans—to be the most unapologetic and authentic versions of themselves, regardless of the negative opinions of others!
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, I have learned numerous life lessons. Being confined indoors taught me to never take life for granted and to appreciate every single aspect of what life has to offer. The pandemic also challenged me creatively; unable to gig and network as I normally would, I was compelled to find alternative ways to promote myself and advance my career. This period of introspection and innovation has ultimately made me a much better artist.
