Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Sheridan
Hi Georgia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My career began as a professional dancer. In college, I chose to pursue dance as my major, but I was required to have a double major, so I chose digital media art as a second major. I thought it was useless since I only wanted to dance, so I saw it as a waste of time. I often used my fellow dancers as my models for my photography courses. After college, I danced professionally for one year before the pandemic hit. While we were in isolating at home, I realized just how unfulfilled I was in my dance career after only one year. I began looking into starting my photography business. Though I did end up going back to my dance job when things opened back up, I didn’t stay long and soon went full force into wedding photography. At the time, I was living in a tourist beach town, so I started photographing families on their beach vacation. I pretty quickly discovered that I most enjoyed working with couples.
I spent years pursuing a dream that ended up falling short of everything I imagined it to be. Walking away from that made me reconsider my identity, my work, and what truly fulfills me. It was not easy to let go of something I had pursued for so long and start over from square one. Honing my craft was one thing, learning to run a business was something else altogether.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In 2023, I decided to move across the country and start over in New York City. When I moved, I only had two clients booked in NYC. I would spend the majority of the year living in NYC and traveling back to Dallas to service my existing client base there. At the same time, I was working overtime in NYC trying to rebuild my business in a brand new market, and a very competitive one at that. Working in two markets cross-country simultaneously was not easy, but by the end of that year I had successfully migrated my business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I photograph couples and weddings – just people in love generally! I take a guided documentary approach, meaning that I try to be as hands off as possible but definitely step in to direct when necessary. My work is informed by how it felt to be there, veering away from overly fabricated posing methods.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
If I could tell myself anything back when I opened my business, it would be to quit comparing myself to other artists. It is an easy thing to do, but my most fulfilling moments have been when I did work that felt like me – not like an imitation of someone else.
