Today we’d like to introduce you to Feixue Mei
Hi Feixue, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up in China, I was surrounded by a rich tapestry of cultural traditions and visual storytelling, which sparked my fascination with art and narrative from an early age. When I moved to the United States, the experience of navigating two distinct cultural worlds deeply shaped my perspective and inspired my creative practice.
My work investigates cultural production as a way to challenge and reimagine social norms. Over time, I’ve developed a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating writing, print and digital publications, videos, and interactive platforms. I’ve always been intrigued by the role of social media and online spaces in shaping individual and collective identities. These tools not only transform how we express ourselves but also create opportunities to amplify marginalized voices and foster community.
I draw influences from diverse sources—Chinese folk art, Surrealism, animation, comics, and internet culture—blending them into an intricate, narrative-driven style. Central themes in my practice include the Asian diaspora, fluid identity, mistranslation, otherness, and the search for belonging. Through adaptation and appropriation, I reimagine symbols and visuals, freeing them from their original contexts to weave them into new, layered stories.
Maximalism resonates with me—its ‘more is more’ philosophy mirrors the complexities of juggling multiple online and offline identities. These identities collide, adapt, and coexist, reflecting the constantly shifting nature of who we are. My journey has been about exploring these intersections and using my art to navigate and share these evolving stories.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road, but I think the challenges have shaped me and my work in meaningful ways. Moving to a different country was both exciting and overwhelming. Navigating a new culture, language, and social system came with feelings of isolation and moments of self-doubt. As someone straddling two worlds, I often felt like I didn’t fully belong to either, which became both a struggle and a central theme in my work.
Another challenge has been working within a space that questions social norms and addresses complex topics like identity and belonging. These themes are deeply personal, yet my experience is not just my own—it represents a collective identity and shared memory, shaped by the histories, migrations, and struggles of many. Translating these layered, nuanced stories into my work can be a complex process, especially in a world that often prioritizes quick, digestible narratives over depth and introspection.
I’ve had to navigate the tension between telling a deeply individual story and honoring its broader, collective resonance. This requires a delicate balance: embracing vulnerability, sharing personal experiences, and weaving them with symbols, visuals, and ideas that connect to larger cultural and historical contexts. My creative practice allows me to tap into shared emotions, mistranslations, and the fluidity of identities, creating a space where individual and collective voices intersect.
Through this process, I’ve learned to stay authentic to my vision while inviting others to see themselves within the narratives I build. It’s about fostering empathy and reflection—reminding us all that the stories of belonging, displacement, and identity are both deeply personal and universally human. This journey has not only shaped my work but also deepened my understanding of the interconnectedness of our experiences.
Despite the roadblocks, I’ve found inspiration in these experiences. They’ve fueled my curiosity and pushed me to think critically about the world, shaping my creative voice and deepening my commitment to fostering dialogue through my work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work merges art, design, illustration, and writing to challenge societal norms and explore themes of identity, migration, and the Asian diaspora. I specialize in creating conceptual imagery and narratives across various mediums, often using illustration to communicate complex ideas with a blend of traditional and contemporary styles.
What sets me apart is my use of Maximalism and the reimagining of symbols to create new stories that reflect the complexities of cultural migration and digital interconnectedness. I’m proud of how my work connects personal and collective experiences, amplifying marginalized voices and fostering dialogue in both digital and shared spaces.
Ultimately, I aim to create work that sparks empathy, reflection, and critical thinking about identity and community, with a focus on visually impactful storytelling.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always curious and observant, deeply interested in the world around me. I had a natural inclination toward art and storytelling, often drawing or writing to make sense of my experiences. I was fascinated by how different cultures expressed themselves and how stories could transcend time and place. This curiosity led me to explore various forms of art, from traditional Chinese techniques to contemporary influences like animation and comics.
Personality-wise, I was introspective and thoughtful, often spending time reflecting on my experiences and the world. At the same time, I was eager to connect with others, even though I sometimes felt torn between different cultural identities. My interests were diverse—ranging from literature and philosophy to visual arts—and I loved exploring how different disciplines could overlap and inform each other.
I think my early years shaped my approach to creativity, blending a deep sense of personal reflection with a desire to understand and engage with the broader world. The intersection of these interests has carried into my work today, where I constantly seek to bridge the personal and collective, the individual and the cultural.
