Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Reed
Hi Emily, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Emily Reed Jewelry is a testament to the beauty found in everyday essentials, crafted with an eye for both simplicity and elegance. The brand emerged from Emily Reed’s own journey of transformation, sparked by an unexpected layoff from her journalism career during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seizing the opportunity presented by free community college courses, Emily dove into the world of jewelry design. This initial foray quickly turned into a passionate pursuit, leading her to establish her own jewelry line in November 2022.
With a foundation rooted in traditional bench jewelry techniques, Emily has developed a distinctive style—characterized by effortless designs and a commitment to sustainability. Her creations are designed to accompany you through all phases of life, offering elevated, everyday basics that blend seamlessly with daily wear.
Emily’s home studio in Santa Fe is a haven for her creative process, where she employs a range of techniques including lost wax casting, hand-fabrication, and water casting. By working with recycled metals and repurposing her own silver scraps, she infuses each piece with a sense of organic uniqueness.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While the decision to start my own business was clear as day, the steps to get to this point have been anything but easy. Not having a business partner means I have to rely on myself for every decision, every day. Trial and error are my best friends—and learning not to take a failed product launch personally.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I think I’m most proud of protecting my creative energy in a highly competitive business where other business owners will try to take that from you or make you feel less than. The thing I’ve learned about myself over the years is that my creativity is my greatest gift—and no one can take that from me. My creative practice makes my business stronger so when I carve time out of a busy season to cultivate new ideas, I see direct results on the business end.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I love this question, as it really gets down to the core of why I started Emily Reed Jewelry in the first place. The only currency that matters to me is time—we can’t get time back and its the only true finite resource humans have. Happiness to me is being outside, with friends and family, doing something I love. Owning my own business means I get to create the time for my happiness above all else.
