Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Higgins
Hi Elizabeth, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I love to be creative, and painting with watercolor brings me so much joy. I love simplifying the process for others, and introducing beginners to the magic of color and water. Painting and teaching have led me to embrace and share the act of creativity as an important tool for emotional well-being. Joy, belonging and healing are the results of making art in community. I am also a trained eco-therapist and enjoy bringing the healing properties of nature into my art and wellness classes and retreats.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am fortunate enough to feel that it has been mostly a smooth road, although I have definitely put a lot of time and energy into my career as a teaching artist. I spend a lot of time planning and preparing my classes, finding students to enroll in them, and managing an active studio practice. I rarely take a break from thinking, creating or connecting to my students.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an interdisciplinary artist and teacher who strives to create joy, connection and healing through my own personal art practice of watercolor painting and collage, as well as the classes I develop and teach to others. I am known for my calm, gentle, non-judgmental teaching demeanor, and my philosophy of embracing the process as a pathway to joy and relaxation, rather than an activity that adds pressure to strive or achieve. My expressive watercolor paintings reflect my love of color, curiousity, playfulness and joy. I am most proud of my students, who make time to care for themselves by enjoying the pleasure of art-making simply for the sake of it.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For those just starting out, don’t be afraid! Don’t tell yourself you’re not an artist. Put aside the judgment and expectations. We all have the ability to create and experience joy through brushing paint on paper, sketching with a pen or pencil, or collaging with colorful swatches of paper.
