Today we’d like to introduce you to Chrissy Crawford Corredor.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always had a passion for Art History—it’s a subject that resonated with me from an early age. Unfortunately, I don’t possess natural artistic talent, so I pursued the academic route to admire and study artists from a distance. In college, I majored in Art History, but after graduation, I realized I didn’t want to become a teacher or work in a museum. Instead, I discovered a love for sales, marketing, and learning about art.
I worked at a few galleries, earned a Master’s in Art Business, and later founded an art advisory company. My business focused on taking collectors to art fairs and helping them build their collections. At that time, the art market was quite insular, and purchasing art required significant travel and financial investment.
ArtStar began as a side project to make art more accessible to younger collectors. This was back in 2011, when very few galleries had websites, let alone e-commerce platforms. Since then, we’ve evolved and now represent over 100 artists from 25 countries.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a challenging journey. When we started, platforms like Shopify and e-commerce didn’t even exist. Building ArtStar’s first website took a year, and I had to raise money just to afford it. Along the way, I overhired, overspent, and tried to accelerate growth too quickly.
Today, we focus on organic, sustainable growth, and are proud to have a 33% repeat customer rate. Our goal at ArtStar is to offer a high-end product while delivering hands-on, exceptional customer service. We want collectors to truly enjoy the experience and feel confident in their purchases. We do not take short cuts for quick growth, but focus on our place in the art market and offering an interesting curatorial perspective. Polished, but fun!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
ArtStar offers a signature curation, carefully selecting works that tell a compelling story, feature vibrant colors, and offer something unexpected. This distinctive approach is what sets us apart from other online galleries. Collectors come to ArtStar for a specific look and something different.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I’ve noticed many competitors offering the same images or styles. Online galleries will need to distinguish their selections from the mass-produced art you find in big chain stores and large retailers. Today’s collectors are seeking something unique and thought-provoking—art that sparks conversation.
