Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Marie
Hi Chloe, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Of course! Today I am an independent hairstylist, renting a chair at a salon, running my own small business alongside other independent stylists.
My journey started back in high school, during the time most people are trying to figure out their future. At first, I had no idea what I wanted to do. Growing up, I never had a consistent hairstylist. When I was younger, my mom would cut my hair in the kitchen, and later, I’d either go to whoever she was seeing at the time or a random salon. Becoming a hairstylist wasn’t even on my radar, especially with the push from school to go to a four-year university.
I have always loved art and creativity and knew I would love a career with those aspects but I didn’t think it was realistic. I would do my friends hair and makeup for school dances and people started suggesting that I could be a hairstylist.
I graduated high school during COVID and after a lot of research I had made my decision to pursue cosmetology.
From the moment I started, everything clicked. I loved it and knew it was the right path. while still in school I started working at a salon, training, and taking on clients right after graduating
That first salon was a huge part of my growth. I spent a year and a half learning about my craft, the industry and myself. Two weeks before Christmas eve, the salon announced it would close before Christmas, I was not sure what to do next. So many different ways to go and so little time. After a lot of thought, reflection, and insight from others, I decided to take the leap to work independently.
That was two years ago, and I am still here today. All I can see ahead is growth and opportunity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wouldn’t say it has been a smooth road, anything big or worthwhile is bound to have its share of challenges. One of my first major challenges was when I was working at a short-staffed salon. I pushed myself to the limit, taking on multiple responsibilities to keep up. I learned the importance of setting boundaries and maintaining balance.
When that salon eventually closed, the next challenge was deciding what to do next. I saw it an an opportunity to grow and advance my career but I didn’t know what the “right” step was. It was Christmas, I was unemployed, and going to interviews left and right. I was asking people I looked up to in the industry for their advice, but their opinions varied. I felt a race against time but also wanting to make the best decision for my future.
When I chose to go independent, I moved to a salon 30 minutes away from the first one. It was closer to where I live but farther from many of my clients, which meant loosing a good portion of my clientele. It felt like starting over after all the hard work I had already put into my business.
Early on, I also faced a lot of doubt about pursuing this career. Some people didn’t see it as realistic, calling it “not a real job” or saying I’d need multiple jobs to make ends meet. Even now, I will occasionally encounter this, people will ask what my plan after this is or assume I do this on the side. I know this is something a lot of people go through in non-traditional careers.
The challenges have pushed my to work harder, grow as a person and as a professional. You have to believe in yourself– or at least fake it until you do– so you can push through those tough times.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Behind the chair, there are so many things I love doing. I enjoy the variety in what I do. There is an artistry and creativity to hairstyling that is almost therapeutic. I love the art in hair styling, whether its an updo, blowout, curls, etc. it’s like sculpting the hair into a finished masterpiece.
When it comes to hair color, I specialize in natural, blended, lived-in looks. I love creating colors that feel like they could naturally grow out that way, A look that grows out nice and stays looking good without a lot of maintenance.
I also focus on working with waves and curls, I do a good amount of wavy/curly cuts. I really enjoy enhancing and defining the curls when styling.
Ultimately, My goal is always to create a look that fits my clients personal style and lifestyle. A look at makes them feel beautiful and is easy for them to maintain in their life.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
That’s a tough question, it’s hard to pick just one memory. One of my favorite childhood memories is camping. My family went camping all the time, sometimes just with my immediate family and other times with a large group of extended family.
I have so many great memories from those trips: sitting around the campfire, playing games, cooking delicious meals, going on walks, and simply having fun with loved ones. It was a special time where we could all be together, with no distractions and worries.
