Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheyenne Sampsill
Hi Cheyenne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After growing up in my grandmother’s beauty shop in Oklahoma, which was attached to her house, I attended cosmetology school at ‘The Hair Academy’ in Bismarck, North Dakota in 2014. Throughout the past 10+ years of my career, I have worked in every salon environment you could think of, from commission to booth rent, in large and intimate settings, etc. About 6 months into my school journey I was introduced to Aveda and fell in love with the brand, from their ethos, to their mission statement and their ethical standards. All of this landed me to my current salon home Ihloff Salon and Spa, located inside Utica Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have spoken previously about my childhood and the less-than-ideal circumstances surrounding it. About. how I grew up working at food banks so that the town wouldn’t know that we ‘needed’ the free food and I played every sport and joined every group I could to secure some assistance after high school because money from family was never an option. When I was young our town’s McDonalds, on Thursdays, had half-priced ‘Happy Meals’ and my family of 3 would split one between us because that’s all we could afford. Much of this was accompanied by many moves, different homes, different schools and various avenues to education. Through it all however I managed to remain creative, which was the only place I really thrived. That creativity blossomed when I followed in my Nana’s footsteps and began doing hair for friends and family when I was about 12, the last 16 years have been a beautiful and colorful blur.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Designer Stylist at Ihloff Salon and focus my work around Lived-in color, barbering, texture servies, and my personal favorite event/bridal styling. The past 5 or so years I have focused my work towards coloring and event/bridal styling, although for the many years before that barbering and working with my wavy, curly, coily, or kinky clients/friends was my bread and butter, and many days still is. The joy I get from helping anyone, on ony occasion, feel more confident and more expressive is second to the joy I get from wathing my children grow.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Within in my personal life, my children are everything. Within my work, hands down the most important part of what I do, for me, is helping someone feel their absolute most confident, sending them out of my care with a changed mindset of themselves and their own input into the world. When someone walks around confident, secure in themselves, and sure of themselves, their cadence changes. The way that they approach situations and hold conversations is altered which ripples down from person to person. Its infection, and in the best way possible.
