Today we’d like to introduce you to Chauncey Graham Graham
Hi Chauncey Graham, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Originating from the Circle City of Indiana, I was born and raised primarily on the eastside of Indianapolis. I have been producing music under the stage name “4200Kory” since February of 2021 & I really got started in music when I realized I could leverage my gift for writing into something much bigger than myself. After graduating high school in 2020 I was pretty inspired to take a “leap of faith” with the music and go all in. Coming from pretty rough environments and being the oldest of 7 are two things I attribute my success to heavily. The process has always been rooted in being grounded, intentional and creating a community enveloped in love despite any hardships I’ve been through.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I wish I could say it’s been a smooth road…or sometimes I wish that anyways. I enjoy the process more than ever these days and find a lot of value in the ebb and flow of progression. There were struggles with funding my passion, establishing a support system and even navigating the evolving music spaces of Indiana. Out of the many things I’ve struggled with while creating music the demand to consistently prove myself has always been one that stuck out to me. It doesn’t allow me to ever settle and that also serves as a great challenge theoretically, but for the most part I had a hard time being patient enough for my work to be “properly valued”.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am both a musical artist & manager/founder of Slum Baby Family LLC, a creative collective centered around highlighting & leveraging talents of all different entertainment mediums. As far as my music, I am independent artist that has based my brand on community and storytelling through my music. Finding ways to help give understanding to those who grew up similar to me, without much.
In regards to being an owner of Slum Baby Family, I specialize in artist development firstly, among so many other things. Being known for helping create a more diverse Indy music scene that also highlights creators in fields such as cinema & fashion. By leveraging my success as an artist independently, I take my knowledge and resources to like minded individuals with the intent to grow and prosper as artists in their own right.
I’d say I’m most proud of the tour I’m currently on with SBF. We’ve spent the last 3 years solidifying a base in Indy and to be bale to take our music and other services nation wide is extremely exciting.
One thing that serves as a sign of separation from others, for us, is our willingness to think outside the box. In a tech-heavy world there are so many ways to lose originality and not muster up the effort to try new things. For not only my own individual brand but for SBF as well, we thrive at pushing the limits of our resources to produce great things. This ranges in the approach we take with our music videos, the creativity of records we release and even the styles that we tend to wear. So often we see people fall in line to the norm and for us we’ve found success in continuously being ourselves.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I think for anyone at any point of being an aspiring artist/creative, a great piece of advice would be loving what you do before anything else. Understanding there will be tradeoffs (time being the biggest and most necessary one) that will pay off far down the line. If you don’t do what you’re doing with an unwavering sense of compassion then you may not get the most out of it.
Another piece of advice would be for you to define your goal of “success” very early on and stand by it. Don’t compare your path to glory by anyone else’s standards because success varies by the metrics of the chaser. I wish I had known these two things earlier because they make the process so much more fun to enjoy when you’re taking the path less traveled.
