Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Vu.
Hi Brian, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Orange County, California. I started drawing as a kid, and kept at it until it was time to apply to colleges. I studied graphic and web design at the Art Institute of California. After graduating I moved to New York City and began my art career. At first, I wasn’t sure which path I wanted to take, eventually I combined my skill sets into photography. Throughout my career, I made it a point to try new things and take in inspiration everywhere I could as I was developing my own style.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it hasn’t. The life of an artist is full of ups and downs. You must learn to take rejection, because nothing is set in stone until the work is happening in front of you. It’s also difficult financially. I’ve always have had to work with what I got, and it’s taught me to be resilient. Creating work can result in vigorous mental, physical, and emotional labor. Everything can feel so personal, so I encourage people to not overthink things.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in portrait photography. I find that my work is flexible but niche at the same time ever since I found my point of view. I’m proud that I was able to make my career come to life and am happy knowing that I tried my best along the way. There are photographs I’ve created that leave me feeling grateful to be there witnessing the moment. I find that what sets me apart from other artists is my love of color theory.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Be yourself. Develop who you are as an artist and put it out there for the world to see.
