Today we’d like to introduce you to Brendon And Brian Fraim
Brendon And Brian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We’ve been drawing for as long as we can remember, and we knew from an early age this is what we wanted to do with the rest of our lives. After attending Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, we started searching for any art gigs we could find, ranging from illustrations for puzzle magazines to role-playing games. We eventually collaborated with some writers and began our careers drawing comic books which we’re still doing today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have certainly been ups and downs and times when we either have way too much to do or barely anything. There’s a saying in the comic book biz that, “If I wanted to be rich, I wouldn’t be drawing comic books.” When you are not an in-demand artist in the comic book industry, many publishers, editors, and fans will try and take advantage of you simply by not offering you a fair price for your work. It also doesn’t help if you haven’t worked for DC or Marvel. Any artist, like ourselves, may still have a successful career, but are still thought of as nobodies by the readers and collectors at large.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We draw comic books and other fantasy-oriented illustrations. We have a knack for drawing humor, so many of our past projects involve comedy in some way whether it’s the PRG system HackMaster or The Three Stooges comic book. We’ve also drawn art for many comic books, board games, card games, comic strips for the web and in an antiques newspaper, box art for advent calendars featuring RPG dice, book covers, as well as commissioned fan drawings.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
When we were starting out, the internet was still new. Now that it has taken over the world, networking has become very easy. A simple Google search can open up a world of possible avenues for employment as long as you know where to look. Also, as a comic book artist, you can attend comic book conventions and talk to professionals and get advice from them.
