Today we’d like to introduce you to Barry Nutall
Hi Barry, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Well… My journey to starting my own food business began with my utter love and respect for food. That journey, I would have to say, started very young. I can remember going out to eat with my entire family one evening at a very nice local restaurant when I was very young. When I was asked what I wanted to eat I excitedly yelled out, “Shrimp!!!” Needless to say, that got some strange looks and inquiries from my family but I can still remember how happy I was and how good it tasted and made me feel.
That is the kind of experiences that I not only continued to chase but I also wanted to bring to the people who come to enjoy my food. I have a saying, “I don’t get out of bed to make crappy food.” That’s something I really try to stand on and live by. I understand the value of money and how hard we work for it. So I always appreciate anyone that spends a dollar at my business and I want to give them the best experience that I can.
As far as why I started the business, it’s because of the passing of my wife in 2020. When shr was alive, we made sure we would venture out to find great food and she would often have me replicate what we ate so we’d never have to go back and spend a ton of money in a restaurant. Not only did it save us a dollar or two but it helped me to hone my cooking skills a bit. We were also very beachy people and we took yearly trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. On one of those trips, surrounded by our very closest friends, we got married in the sand of the town of Kill Devil Hills. That’s where the name of my business, Kill Devil Meals LLC stems from. It’s a dedication to her, my family, our friends, and all of the wonderful times we spent together at our favorite place on Earth.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth….? Business…. SMOOTH!?! I don’t believe anyone has ever made those words synonymous! I would have to say my first year in 2021, post Covid, was my best one. Everyone was so ready to be outside and having fun that I made a killing financially that year. Things have, obviously, fallen off since then but it has challenged me to generate money a bit more through throwing my own events or collaborating with other businesses or tracking down new venues for me to sell my products. And while all of that is very challenging, it’s only made me stronger and built my clientele and connections.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The main part of my business is the vending aspect. For the most part, I sell Southern Coastal rice bowls. It’s a lighter, healthier way to give people that Southern soul taste that we all love. And it’s a format that definitely has its own lane here in Western Pennsylvania.
I also do a bit of catering, which I would love to do more of. A lot of the catering/party food in this area is the same. There’s certain things that you almost expect to see at every event. And I would like to help change a lot of that narrative.
How do you think about happiness?
Without a doubt, my family and friends make me the happiest. I’ve been blessed with a really amazing support system. I don’t always know the best ways to utilize them but I know they are always there and that means the world to me.
I also really enjoy traveling. I don’t get to do it nearly enough but I can say that with in the past couple of months, I’ve been to 2 of the most iconic concert venues, Bethel Woods, NY (Home of Woodstock) and Red Rocks, Colorado. Those were 2 places that I will never forget!
And lastly, I really find joy in seeing people enjoy my food. It takes a lot of work to pull off good food and to get that instant gratification and happiness really something special and heartwarming.
