Today we’d like to introduce you to Avgoustina Papadopoulou
Hi Avgoustina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Honestly, it all started with watching the movie “Troy.” It was my first ever movie, and I was so so young. I remember how much I got obsessed with everything – the emotions, the characters, the music. It made me feel like I was there, living and feeling what they were experiencing in the movie. I will never forget that feeling. I got addicted. From that moment on, I knew that whatever I did in life, it had to be connected to the world of storytelling and filmmaking.
Over the years, I’ve tried my hand at various jobs in marketing and acting. While these experiences were valuable and taught me a lot, I always found myself coming back to my true passion: writing and directing. I started writing as much as I could, pouring my heart into every story. I faced a lot of rejections and failures, but each setback only fueled my determination to keep going.
I realized that instead of pushing myself towards big, unachievable projects, it was better to start small and build up gradually. It’s a bit like the story of the tortoise and the hare – slow and steady wins the race. This approach allowed me to develop my skills and gain confidence in my abilities.
My ultimate goal is to finish a feature film that I have been dreaming about for a very long time. If I can achieve that within the next two years, I will be the happiest person. My journey has been filled with challenges and detours, but my love for storytelling has always guided me back to my true path.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Has it been a smooth road? Oh, definitely not! This industry is full of twists and turns. But honestly, that’s part of what I’ve come to love about it. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t enjoy struggling. However, over time, you start to get used to the challenges and learn how to cope with them. Eventually, you find a strange sense of satisfaction in navigating those difficulties.
There have been plenty of struggles along the way. For one, it takes a lot of hard work and self-discipline. You need to get used to facing competition and rejection all the freaking time, and you have to stay confident in your own work, even when you know there are a ton of other people with the same drive and ideas.
Even though it’s not an easy path, it’s one I’m passionate about, and that makes it all worthwhile.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in writing and directing, and I’m all about crafting stories that really connect with people. I focus on creating narratives that dive deep into emotions and explore what it means to be human in the cruel yet wonderful world. I love working on projects that make audiences feel like they’re right there with the characters, experiencing their journey firsthand.
I’m probably best known for a series of short films I’ve directed and produced these past two years ‘Death.’ and ‘Nihilism’. Both have done really well at film festivals. Those projects were special to me because they let me experiment with different styles and push my creative limits. Hearing positive feedback and seeing people respond to my work has been incredibly fulfilling.
What sets me apart? Hmm that’s a great yet a tough question to answer. I don’t know, I think it really comes down to the unique perspective each artist brings to their work. We can all look at the same thing and create completely different stories around it. For me, I love how my imagination tends to be quite wild and free, with no limits. It allows me to approach storytelling in a fresh and unconventional way. My perspective is open and ever-evolving, which means I can bring a distinctive and original angle to the stories I tell.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Oh, definitely! There are a few people who have really made a difference in my journey.
First, my parents deserve a huge shoutout. They’ve always supported me, even when my imagination ran very wild. I was always coming up with the craziest stories, and they were just there, cheering me on and helping me nurture that creativity.
Then there was my English teacher from back in the day. She was a big believer in my writing, even when I was really young. Her encouragement meant a lot, even though there was a funny moment when she had to call my mom because I wrote a story about an old lady who owned a hostel and was eating her guests! My mom was pretty freaked out, but it was all in good fun.
I also have to mention a university professor who, at the time, I thought really didn’t like me. He was tough on my stories, and I never quite understood why. Looking back, I realize part of it was due to some biases, but his harsh feedback actually made me tougher. I kept writing and didn’t let his criticism get me down, which was a huge lesson in resilience. However he made me cry a lot.
Lastly, my current boyfriend, who works in the same field, has been an incredible support. Whenever I’m on the verge of giving up or feeling insecure, he’s there to lift me up and keep me going. His talent and encouragement are invaluable to me.
