Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Cochran
Hi Austin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started out making music in a band called Bad Fathers. I did that for 10 years and then I started producing music on my own. I eventually started shooting music videos and that transitioned into narrative music videos which eventually gave way to shooting a feature film called Suite Killing Machines. I have since shot a second feature, which I am currently editing called Sanguine Teeth on a Driftless Road. I also just finished another script for a feature I plan to shoot in 2025 called Big Sky Disturbed.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road because I did not come from money so problems were not easily fixable by throwing money at it and paying someone to take care of it. I have had to learn how to fix all my own problems and it has taken a long time. It has been arduous, but it has led me to a place where I have a lot of skills to accomplish my projects.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actor, director, singer, music producer, cinematographer, writer, editor, gaffer, graphic designer, carpenter, and numerous other things. I’m probably most recently known for the movie Suite Killing Machines that I wrote and directed. Different people may know me for some of my music. I guess I’m most proud of the fact that I managed to independently shoot two feature length films that I wrote, produced, directed, scored and edited. I know a lot of people say, “you just can’t do a good job, or a quality job if you are doing so many things in the production of a film.” I’m aware that there are things that will slip through the cracks here and there. But for my second feature I gave myself a year to produce it and I have no hard deadline to get it all finished. so I can take my time with all the post work. I have a somewhat unique situation, in that I am involved from start to finish. So I can make adjustments when things need to change or don’t work. If I made a mistake somewhere, I can figure out how I can adjust at any point in the process. There are mistakes made on almost every film. Being flexible and creative help me with the fixes. Sometime mistakes lead me to solving them with something that turns out even more interesting and creative than what was originally planned. Film making is fun journey filled with twists and turns, so I guess I specialize in creating and seeing a project through by using a wide range of skills together.
I probably have a somewhat unique voice because I don’t think I see the world in the same way that a lot of people do.
How do you think about happiness?
Creating things. I like the puzzle of it. I love constructing something from scratch. Making movies for example has a lot of pieces and I really enjoy putting all those things together. From starting with building a story, to writing it, to figuring out how to make it happen logistically, making costumes, props, sets, figuring out how to play the character I’m portraying, to directing it and then giving it music and editing it together. It’s a huge puzzle that really entertains me.
