Today we’d like to introduce you to Arkh Zeus
Hi Zeus, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started out writing a lot when I was a kid. Writing became an outlet for my creativity after I gave up on trying to draw. Eventually, I began crafting stories and building entire worlds with my words. Fast forward to age 12, I heard “Highs 2 Lows” by Nujabes and was inspired to write my first verse. I wouldn’t begin honing my rap skills until my freshman year of high school, though. Around that time, I met my mentor KayO and she motivated me to give it a genuine try. I’ve been Zeus ever since.
10 years later, rapping became just one of the many skills that I picked up. I learned how to engineer and make beats in the first 2 years of me becoming an artist. I went on to put out several albums and produced a countless amount of records for myself and many other artists. I even started my own record label, Zenith Royale.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My come up wasn’t a tragic journey by any means, but I wouldn’t say the road was all that smooth either. Many things that come with this journey I inevitably went through. I’ve made and lost friends. I’ve dealt with great and terrible people. I even contemplated giving up a few times. Not necessarily giving up on music, but giving up on life as a whole. Throughout my journey, I’ve battled an internal warfare with myself that affected everything in and outside of the music. Some would say it gave me a lot of stuff to talk about. Others and myself are simply glad that I’m still here.
I’d say everyday is a struggle to some degree. That’s just life. I’m grateful that I have the capacity to even talk about it, especially in my music. It’s the main thing that keeps me going. Without it, I’m not so sure that I’d be alive today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I guess you could say that I’m a “multi-faceted” creative. I write, rap, sing, produce, engineer, and I own a record label. I even slightly dabble in graphic design. Many of my album and single covers were designed by me. I *currently* have 9 studio albums to my name. I would say I’m mostly known for my 4th album “SPIRIT BOMB”. It’s a compilation album that I produced from top to bottom, and features collaborations from several other artists in the Greater Boston area. That album exemplifies what I think sets me apart from others due to how dedicated I am to the curation of a project. I treat albums like worlds, and the tracklist is the experience through that world. Thanks to the impact of SPIRIT BOMB, I was able to cement a positive reputation for my curation and collaborative skills as an artist, which I think is very important.
I’m proud of all of my work, but I think SPIRIT BOMB gave me the most to be proud about, even if it is not my favourite body of work that I made.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
There’s a lot that I see shifting in the next 5-10 years. The label’s growth is what I think I’m mostly excited for. I see Eflat (co-CEO of my label) and I signing a couple more artists. We already have 2 on our radar that we hope to establish some type of business with. A lot of albums to look forward to, including most of them being my own. I’m currently at 9 albums, but I’ll probably triple that amount in 10 years…quadruple if we’re talking about albums in general. I see my other endeavors growing exponentially. Things like the SPIRIT BOMB FESTIVAL come to mind immediately. I see that overtaking the likes of a “Boston Calling” as a staple annual event for not just MA, but the entirety of New England to never want to miss out on. Overall, I’m just looking forward to seeing all these seeds I’ve been planting since the beginning bear fruit.
