Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Washington Petta
Hi Angela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My beauty journey started at the age of 13. I developed cystic acne on my face, neck, chest and back. My mother had perfect skin, so she took me to the dermatologist. The dermatologist recommended a skincare routine. Next, my mother took me to Merle Norman Cosmetics where I was blessed with my first skincare routine. I was very consistent and used it in the AM/PM along with daily sunscreen. Eventually, my skin started to heal and the acne marks were starting to fade after 10-11 months of consistency.
This process started my love affair with makeup and skincare. Fast forward to age 17 and I was employed by the very Merle Norman Cosmetics location that helped me at age 13. I got to help others with the condition of his/her/their skin. I loved seeing the smiles from my clients as they loved their own reflection in the mirror. This is when I knew what my calling was, to be a makeup artist/skincare specialist. I truly enjoy helping others to look and feel their best through makeup, skincare and self care.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road. When you start truly caring for your skin, it takes time. When I started my first skincare routine, it took almost a year to see real results. Consistency is key with any routine rather it be skincare, self care, mental health care, physical health care, relationship, career, etc. One must be dedicated and make a serious commitment to reaching the goal/finish line. I knew in my heart that I could have smooth, clear and radiant skin. Even today, I never skip my skincare ritual, NEVER. I suggest turning your self care into a lovely ritual and make time for yourself. Believe me, you will not regret it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Ahh, what am I most proud of? That would be being selected as a skincare model for The Inkey List 2020 campaign. What an incredible honor to be a part of their campaign and the other 10 selectees. It was a wonderful and magical experience. I got to share my skincare story, how I worked with several brands including: La Bella Donna, Arbonne, Mary Kay, Avon, Eye Kandy, etc. That day, I truly felt like I had achieved a goal of being a model with clear and beautiful skin. I use this blessed opportunity to help others find their skin prescription to achieve their personal skincare goals. I’m very grateful, honored & humbled by that experience.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Fortunately, since I have over 30+ years experience in the beauty industry, I am fortunate enough to have incredible contacts. That said, I would recommend to someone starting out, to do some research online for simple courses to learn the jargon and what is current. Apply for a job in the field you are passionate about. If you do not have any driving force to keep you moving forward, you most likely will end up not following through. Your passion is the fuel, the inertia that keeps you going no matter how many times you may be told no. Believe me, it will happen. You will hear a few no’s, but there are yeses too. Stay true to yourself, true to your art and true to your passion and I believe you will be successful with whatever you choose to do with your life.🙏🏽
