Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Moore.
Hi Andrew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began playing piano when I was 8 years old. I was forced to take lessons for 2 years. I am glad that I was now that I look back. I played on stage at church growing up through my teenage years. Then I drifted away from playing. I began strip mining coal for 7 years in Kentucky and West Virginia. I then moved to Florida and got married to my wife Tara. I became a commercial diver, welding underwater and could tell you a million stories on that alone. After a couple of years in that industry I moved north to the Adirondack Mountains where my family had an 1891 built Inn. We rebuilt a speakeasy in the basement that had existed long ago. There was a void in entertainment, so I gathered some buddies and my father and created the house band and called it Hooch. After 5 years or so there, my wife was missing her family and home in Kentucky. So, we moved back to where I was born and raised in London Kentucky. I auditioned to play music at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse in Lexington Ky and landed the gig. I then met Logan Turner, Matthew Skaggs, Gabe Crockett, and Jordan Robson through networking and relaunched a new version of Hooch that we call today Andrew Moore and Hooch. Last year we released our debut album in October and won awards for Best song and Best Band in Hollywood California and in Nashville Tennessee on stage of the Grand Ole Opry. We accumulated around 250,000 streams of our music thus far. Today we are in the process of writing our 2nd album as we continue to perform live every week in places like Tennessee, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. The majority of our performances are in Lexington Kentucky at Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. I had to leave coal mining behind when they started shutting down the mines in 2008. I scratched me head trying to find out what I could do that could possibly replace the money that I was making. I chose commercial diving. When I went to Commercial Diving Academy I found out for the first time that I was claustrophobic when they put black tape over my helmet so I could not see and dropped me in a 30ft tank of water. I had sold my house to pay for the schooling so I had no choice but to close my eyes and pray every time that I went under. There were days where I would spend 8hrs in pitch black water with different things rubbing against me, and I had no idea what they were. It was a tough road through all of that but I knuckled down and finished 2nd in my class and went to work as a commercial diver despite being scared of what I was doing every day. When we were playing music in the speakeasy in upstate New York, I had a terrible fight with some family members which led us to not talking for nearly half of a year. Thankfully we have all put that behind us and to this day remain very close. When we moved back home to Kentucky I had to push restart on my entire life and start back from the bottom. We left behind nice vehicles and a nice home to exchange it for not so nice cars and renting a trailer. God, family, and music helped carry me through a lot of this, the avenue of writing and performing served as an escape for me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the lead singer and pianist for Andrew Moore and Hooch. I write all of my own music and lyrics. The band members also pitch in to help with writing certain parts of the music. I am known for breaking pianos. The energy that comes out of me when performing often leads to piano strings on grand pianos breaking or my electronic keyboards just getting destroyed to the point of having to replace them. I am most proud of the accomplishments of my original music. We received hollywood independent music award for Blues song of the year at the Avalon Theater in Hollywood California in July. We received a Josie Music Award (The largest and most respected awards show for independent music in the world.) for Group of the Year in the multi-genre category. What sets me apart from others would probably be the trust and faith I have in God to always have my back as he always has. I try not to sweat anything knowing that everything will turn out just fine. Another thing that sets me apart I have been told, and I believe, is the ability to perform straight from my heart. When I get on stage, the world goes away and I become someone different almost. I am vulnerable and transparent on stage, and it comes through in a way where audiences can feel the energy and see my whole heart.
What matters most to you? Why?
Faith and Family. Without these two things I would not be where I am today. I would more than likely be jail or worse. My wife and kids support my love for music and wanting to keep going with it. God continues to open doors for me every day and it is my job to walk through them.
