Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandro Caiazza
Hi Alejandro , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a special inclination towards art, I remember winning first prize for drawing and painting at an early age. I was about 8 years old, as the years went by my desire to become an artist grew, I read biographies about great masters, copied their paintings, and little by little I found my voice, in 1998 I had the opportunity to do my first solo exhibition in an important gallery in the city, and since then I continued painting, in a self-taught way (despite certain studies that I managed to do) I moved from my childhood and adolescence, Venezuela to Paris (France) where I managed to exhibit in a gallery, which took my work to Rome and Japan, in addition to Paris. I had to work in restaurants and cafes as a “commis de cuisine” at that time to support myself. My paintings began to sell, I moved to Houston, where I continued and settled in New York City, where I obtained representation from a gallery as well as exhibiting in several others in Manhattan in the state of New York. And the U.S.A.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In my childhood country I can say that the beginning was relatively easy because I was there with comfort, connections and friendships despite not having honest and clear family support, I was able to impose my vocation with effort and work, until the moment came when I understood that it was necessary to leave (especially in a family and personal environment) … With some money I decided to go to Europe and I must say that it was “not” an easy path, in addition to looking for financial subsidy, having various jobs to survive, I had to have the engine in me to create art, in small spaces like the room where I lived, after that look for places to exhibit, learn a new language, understand the codes of the city, everything that is the adaptation, without knowing anyone and in big cities like Paris and New York City, even so the illusion and perseverance ended up bearing fruit.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
am a Visual Artist, strongly influenced by Expressionism, Art Brut and Outsider Art, my work talks about everyday situations in life in general, sometimes with a funny or childish sense but with a strong emotional charge, With respect to feeling proud, I can say that I was able to go through and overcome situations and people, I was able to reinvent myself, learn and grow although with stumbles but always on the way, I feel really proud of it, of being an international Artist and that I am living my dream. of childhood and as an adult,. I am known for my paintings with a childish and expressive stroke or language, in which you can often find real objects stuck in them and that is in turn what distinguishes me.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck, good and bad, may have played a role in my career, of course it has, but above all, perseverance and a sense of vocation and trying to find that better luck for myself, through work and perseverance without losing perspective.
