Often, those who tread off the beaten path are misunderstood or mischaracterized and so we asked folks from the community to reflect and tell us about the times they’ve been misunderstood or mischaracterized.

As an artist and entertainer, I believe the nature of my work can sometimes be misunderstood or mischaracterized. There’s often a perception that pursuing a creative path is less stable or serious compared to more conventional career choices. This misconception can lead to judgments about the value of what I do or the effort it requires. Choosing a creative career means stepping off the beaten path and embracing uncertainty, which can invite criticism or skepticism from those who may not fully understand the dedication, passion, and resilience it takes to succeed in this field. It’s not just about talent; it’s about consistent effort, adaptability, and a deep commitment to growth and self-expression. Read more>>

Throughout my life, I have often found myself standing out in ways that others may have perceived as unusual or atypical. From an early age, I was raised as an only child and frequently exhibited abilities and interests beyond my peers. I recall, for instance, completing a college-level homework assignment for a church member while still in elementary school. In my hometown, such behavior was often viewed with curiosity or even skepticism. By the time I was seven, I had mastered skills such as riding a unicycle, walking on stilts, and designing websites. My work is often misunderstood and mischaracterized, much of this is my fault since my work tends to be symbolic and surreal. While it is narrative, the storyline is not often clear. I use symbols and clues within the painting but often the title is the best place to start. My work is very personal as well so there are times when I’m intentionally vague, It is more effective for viewers to come up with their interpretations of my work and I actively encourage that. In the past I’ve had potential collectors press me for answers about what a specific piece means, and are then disappointed in the answers I give them and ultimately a sale is lost. Read more>>

As an LGBTQ+ person, much of the world is already against us. Add pounds of make up, glitter, & sequins and the world becomes even darker once you step out of the spotlight. The first Drag show I ever produced was an all-ages family-friendly show. We are approaching the 2 year anniversary, amidst rising gender politics and a controversial presidential party switch. Concerns for the safety of myself, my performers and audience members are now heightened as scenes of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, and countless other queer history tragedies, loop in the back of my head. I’ve unfortunately had to deal with threats of protests over one of the drag brunch shows I produced. Luckily, the outpour of community and local business support allowed for the show to go on. Being an undiagnosed autistic woman means that many of my most devoted efforts to do something positive have been misinterpreted as sinister or malicious. One of the most glaring examples came during my life coaching certification. As a part of my training program there was a 3 day capstone live, in person event. I was SO excited to BE in person with people who I had spent hours and hours with virtually training. This was our one and only chance to be together. One of the mantras of this program was “You are enough!” and they would always talk about being transparent, authentic, and open. I finally felt like I had found my people and that with them, I could be myself. Read more>>

It’s a beautiful thing to be misunderstood because it means there’s depth to what I create. I think the most common misunderstanding about my work is that it’s always about love or heartbreak. People sometimes box alternative R&B or neo-soul into that narrative, but my songs are often about freedom, self-reflection, or even frustration with societal norms I’m an outgoing individual but I’m falling in love with being a loner. Especially due to the duality and many facets I have in my life. The more I elevate the more I find a need to shed. Read more>>
